O1_ 631 7 CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO . Carlos Gimenez, City Manager DATE June 14, 2001 FILE SUBJECT World Economic Forum Pocket Item FRAM Commissioner Johnny L.Winton REFERENCES ENCLOSURES The World Economic Forum was established several decades ago in Davos, Switzerland. It is a non-profit organization that brings together CEOs of major companies and world leaders. The purpose of the event is to discuss and present resolutions that would assist global economic development, such as free trade initiatives, environmental concerns, and assistance to developing nations. Prior to each annual meeting, there are regional meetings and the next regional meeting is for the Latin American Region. The main theme is the free trade area of the Americas. Hosting this well-known event is beneficial for the City of Miami from an image and branding point of view, as well as an opportunity to showcase Miami as a key global center for the Americas. I respectfully request that the City Commission authorize the City Manager, assisted by the International Trade Board (ITB), to discuss with the Florida Department of State, having the City of Miami host the 2002 World Economic Forum for the Latin American Region. I also respectfully request that the City Commission authorize the City Manager and the ITB Executive Director, to work and cooperate with the Florida Secretary of State in the submission of a proposal for the planning and hosting of this event. 01- 631
