A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE FLORIDA STATE LEGISLATURE TO GRANT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO HIALEAH PARK BY AUTHORIZING AND ISSUING RACING DATES FOR HIALEAH PARK THAT DO NOT CONFLICT WITH THE DATES AUTHORIZED AND ISSUED FOR OTHER RACING FACILITIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, Hialeah Park, one of Miami's oldest and most treasured tourist attractions, was built in 1924, and opened its historic gates for racing on January 25, 1925; and WHEREAS, Hialeah Park has provided an awe inspiring showcase of 16th century French Mediterranean architecture, glamour, and top quality thoroughbred racing, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world and is referred to as "The Track That Made Miami Famous"; and WHEREAS, Hialeah Park holds the dual distinction of being listed in the National Register of Historic Places and being designated by the Audubon Society as a sanctuary for the American Flamingo; and CITY Cdr MEETING OF APR 2 6 2001 Of 40 WHEREAS, due to changing times, Hialeah Park faces the possibility of closing its gates if the Florida Legislature does not authorize and issue racing dates for Hialeah Park that do not conflict with dates authorized and issued for any other racing facility in South Florida; WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission wishes to support Hialeah Park by urging the Florida Legislature to calendar racing dates so all racing facilities located in South Florida are afforded equal opportunity to host tourists and residents at their scheduled events; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as'if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Florida State Legislature is urged to grant equal opportunity to Hialeah Park by authorizing and issuing racing dates for Hialeah Park that do not conflict with dates authorized and issued for other racing facilities in South Florida. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Jeb Bush, Lieutenant Governor Frank T. Brogan, President of the Florida Senate John M. McKay, Page 2 of 3 O i- 340 Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Tom Feeney, and all members of the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation. Section 4.
