We are proud to state that the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center has been in continuous operation since 1926 and continues to be a viable, integral part of the cultural life of the City of Miami. In honor of its 75th anniversary, we respectfully request a co- sponsorship from the City of Miami for the placement of a series of street pole banners in and around downtown Miami. These banners will commemorate that landmark celebration and would be in place from September 1 through September 30, 2001, We look forward to this momentous celebration and the support from the City of Miami. That is, I am directly seeking City of Miami co-sponsorship of the Miami Cycling Classic heading our way in October (Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21, 2001), so that we can utilize pole -banners to promote the event. I am very proud to have landed The Pro Cycling Tour for the first time ever in Florida. itfiami will be the host to all of the top professional franchises of pro cycling in the U.S., including the U.S. Postal Service team, in a season -ending, grand finale in October. 1lliami also gets the good grace to crown the U.S. Pro Cycling Tour Champion in a national awards ceremony Sunday night, October 21. Effective promotion will be die key to getting large numbers of spectators out and underscore Aliami's importance as a national venue before the eyes of the nation. National television coverage will focus ou the crowds and much will be written nationally about Miami (like last year calling the Grove Race the coolest race in Americal). So we need to bring out the fans, and the pole -banners along the U.S. 1 corridor will be a key component in our marketing and promotion of the event. Please assist us by having a resolution authorizing co-sponsorship of the Miami Cycling Classic, to the extent of permitting the placement of pole-banncrs within the city, placed on the agenda for the Special City Commission Meeting next Thursday, July 19, 2001. We are working very hard to make Miami shine as a national venue for pro sports and specifically pro -cycling.
