FLORIDA 0 45 INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: The Honorable Mayor and Members DATE: JUN 26 FILE of the City Commission susiEcT • Miami Police Department's Policies & Procedures — Discharge of Firearms FROM . enez REFERENCES July 10, 2001 City Commission City Manage Meeting - Discussion Item ENCLOSURES' During the latter part of March 2001, I advised you that the Miami Police Department would be addressing issues relating to the review and investigation of police shootings, such as the creation of a citizens review panel, as well as other areas concerning the discharge of firearms/use of deadly force. At that time, you were advised that an interim report would be provided to you within 90 days, and I had planned to schedule this for discussion at the last City Commission meeting in June. Since the June 28'h City Commission meeting has been rescheduled, I have directed that a discussion item be included on the City Commission agenda for July 10, 2001, regarding the Miami Police Department's policies and procedures governing the discharge of firearms and the possibility of establishing an independent forum for the review/investigation of police performance to include shootings. At this meeting, Chief Raul Martinez will be making a presentation, as well as responding to any inquiries you may have.
