Dear Mr. Russamanno:
In honor of Black History Month, please join with the City of Miami's elected
officials in recognizing and honoring the legal pioneers who served as municipal court
judges in the Black community during 1950-1964. Proclamations will be issued to the -
judges and their families by the City Commission at its meeting on Thursday, February
22, 2001, at 9:30 a.m.
In 1950, the City of Miami established, as part of its Municipal Court system, a
jurisdictional district which served the Black community. The Honorable Lawson E.
Thomas was selected to preside over that court, becoming the first Black judge in the
South since the Reconstruction era. He and Judge John D. Johnson and other judges ably
and laudably served throughout the tenure of the municipal court system until the court
system was abolished. Judge Thomas, Judge Johnson and others have contributed much
to the City of Miami and the legal community and greatly deserved to be recognized for
their accomplishments.
The City Commission meeting is held at City Hall located at 3500 Pan American
Drive, Miami, FL. If you would like more information, please contact Assistant City
Attorney Erica N. Wright at (305) 416-1857.
The City of Miami's elected officials and I hope that you will be able to join us at
this special occasion.
