Development Summit Concept Initiated by Commissioner Sanchez, City staff and private sector representatives in the field of property development have met regularly since April 2000 to plan and produce a conference for real estate development professionals, service providers, lenders and end-users that will feature development and investment opportunities in Miami. Local businesses are helping to plan the event and will serve as sponsors, panelists and hosts. Adopted vision & mission statements as follows: Vision The Miami Development Summit is committed to present an international symposium that will showcase development and investment opportunities in Miami — an international metropolis that reflects today the America of tomorrow in its exciting new world economy with its diversity, global opportunity and convergence of leisure and living. Mission The Miami Development Summit will showcase the cosmopolitan City of Miami to real estate development professionals and development end-users, featuring the authentic new world neighborhoods and international business centers of this subtropical jewel. The Summit will enable participants to explore genuine and financially rewarding opportunities to join in Miami's continued growth as a fascinating place to live, work and play in the next millennium. Sponsors and Partners The City of Miami's Real Estate & Economic Development Department and the Planning Department have been chiefly involved in the preparations to date, with assistance from the Department of Conference Conventions & Public Facilities. To date the following entities have committed to become sponsors of the event and the remaining list have committed to assist with the Summit and have actively participated in planning for the event. (Sponsor Recruitment), Tony Trella, The Meranth Company and Richard Langhorne, The Langhorne Company (Program), Cheryl Jacobs, Zyscovich Architects (Marketing), and Vicky Garcia -Toledo, Bilzin, Sumberg, Dunn, Price & Axelrod (Pro Development). Target Market Based on the City's goal to showcase development opportunities that currently exist in both the public and private sectors, as well as opportunities that are anticipated in the future, we hope to attract local, national and international development professionals and end-users. Given the proposed conference timing & format, we have conservatively estimated 300 to 400 attendees, with approximately 150 of those coming from outside of the local area. Program A subcommittee co-chaired by Tony Trella, The Meranth Company, and Richard Langhorne, The Langhorne Company, leaders in the Southeast District Council of the Urban Land Institute, have been recruiting private sector professionals representing different aspects of the development industry. General session topics will deal with critical issues about Miami's unique position in the new economy and global marketplace featuring nationally recognized speakers to reach a broad audience. Workshops and tours will feature more narrowly focused topics and projects planned or underway in the City. These panelists will be culled through the ranks of the local real estate development community, the Urban Land Institute, the Counselors of Real Estate, and local educational institutions including the University of Miami and the FIU/FAU Joint Center for Urban and Environmental Problems. Conference Time Frame & Format The Summit will be a 21/7 day conference which will include keynote speakers, concurrent workshops/ panel discussions and several guided tours of local areas and facilities that demonstrate development trends and issues. Highlights will be a welcoming cocktail reception and a reception and gala dinner. Location: Hotel Inter -Continental Miami Date: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 4, 5 and 6, 2001 Preliminary Schedule: Wednesday 12 pm - 5 pm Registration 4 pm - 6 pm Welcome Cocktail Reception Thursday 8 am - 10 am General Session Breakfast 10 am - 12 pm Concurrent Workshops 12 pm - 2 pm General Session Luncheon 2 pm - 5 pm Mobile Workshops/Tours 6 pm - 9 pm Reception/Gala Dinner Friday 8 am - 10 am General Session Breakfast 10 am - 12 pm Concurrent Workshops 12 pm - 2 pm General Session Luncheon Development Process Improvements It is important to note that the planning process for the Summit has initiated a very positive dialogue between City staff and the private sector as to ways the City can improve its permitting and development procedures. A separate subcommittee has been formed that is looking at the flow of the development process from both sides (the City's & the developers') to find areas that can be improved. We are looking at innovations put in place by other cities — like "on-line" permit up -dates, and performance-based zoning guidelines. Workshops led by local development industry experts are being held as information exchanges with staff. This is intended to be an on-going process, with improvements implemented from these initial discussions to be announced at the Miami Development Summit. 01- 06 "IM 1 A I I DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT An international symposium showcasing the City of Miami's development, redevelopment and investment opportunities.
