HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-02-1052J-02-701 07/18/02 RESOLUTION NO. 02-1052 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION ENDORSING, URGING AND RECOMMENDING THE NAMING OF THE DINNER KEY SOUTH CHANNEL AS THE "JOHN A. BRENNAN CHANNEL"; REFERRING AND RECOMMENDING SUCH ACTION TO THE CITY OF MIAMI WATERFRONT BOARD; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO ACCOMPLISH THE SUPPORT OF AN INITIATIVE TO ACCOMPLISH THE NAMING OF., THE CHANNEL, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE PROVISION OF EVIDENCE OF LOCAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND THE TRANSMITTAL OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE APPROPRIATE STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES. WHEREAS, John A. Brennan, a founding member and former chair of the City of Miami's Waterfront Advisory Board, was instrumental in the creation of the Dinner Key South Channel and continues to be a tireless leader in the community efforts to preserve and promote the waterfront vistas in the City of Miami; and WHEREAS, John A. Brennan, past commodore of Coconut Grove Sailing Club and active club member for 40 years, was the motivating force behind the City's structuring and design of the Dinner Key South Channel to Biscayne Bay to accommodate sailboats; and CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF SEE 2 6 2002 ResoLufion No. 02-1052 WHEREAS, John A. Brennan is universally recognized as a civic -minded leader with an unwavering commitment to the community and has worked tirelessly to encourage and support public use and appreciation of the water -related natural resources of our city; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate and in the best interests of the City and its residents and visitors for the City of Miami, in appreciation and recognition of John A. Brennan's enduring commitment, to revere this outstanding community leader by naming the Dinner Key South Channel the "John A. Brennan Channel." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Miami strongly endorses, urges, recommends and supports the official naming and designating of the Dinner Key South Channel as the "John A. Brennan Channel" and encourages the appropriate federal, state and county agencies and officials to pursue this action. Section 3. The City of Miami Waterfront Board and the City Manager are authorized and directed to support this Page 2 of 3 02-1052 initiative, to provide the appropriate federal, state and county agencies and officials with evidence of local community support, including but not limited to this resolution, to execute and submit any applications which may be required, and otherwise to pursue the accomplishment of this commemorative naming. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission. Brennan Channel" FROM: REFERENCES: ez City Manage ENCLOSURES: RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission pass the attached resolution which endorses, urges, and recommends the naming of the Dinner Key South Channel as the "John A. Brennan Channel." BACKGROUND Having held such titles as Commodore of the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, of which he has been an active club member for 40 years, and founding member and former chair of the City of Miami's Waterfront Advisory Board, Mr. John A. Brennan has distinguished himself as a model citizen and tireless leader in the efforts to preserve and promote the waterfront vistas in the City of Miami. He was the motivating force behind the City's structuring and design of the Dinner Key South Channel to Biscayne Bay to accommodate sailboats. Mr. Brennan's commitment to the Dinner Key South Channel project and the Miami community, as well as his tremendous love for the water, merits that the City of Miami endorse such action concerning the naming of the channel as the "John A.
