HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-02-0803J-02-709 7/9/02 RESOLUTION NO. 02— 803 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S), RESTATING ITS SUPPORT FOR THE OF THE UNITED NATIONS' CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN AS STATED IN RESOLUTION NO. 00-917, ADOPTED OCTOBER 26, 2000, ATTACHED AND INCORPORATED; FURTHER, URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO IMMEDIATELY RATIFY SAID CONVENTION; AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Miami City Commission's support of the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women as stated in Resolution No. 00-917, adopted October 26, 2000, attached and incorporated, is restated. Section 2. The United States Congress is urged to immediately ratify said Convention. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President George W. Bush, Vice -President Richard B. Cheney, Speaker the House J. WHEREAS, on December 18, 1979, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the report from the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (the "Convention"); and WHEREAS, in 1979, the United States delegates to the United Nations signed the Convention; and WHEREAS, the Convention has subsequently been ratified by 139 out of 185 United Nations member countries or states; and WHEREAS, the United States Congress has not yet ratified the Convention; and 02 803 CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF kcesoiuuon No. ft_C WHEREAS, ratification of the Convention is currently pending before the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the adopting of Resolution No. R-1607-95, the Board of Miami -Dade County Commissioner urged the United States Congress to ratify said Convention; and WHEREAS, the Miami Commission on the Status of Women recognizes the importance of the adoption of the Convention for all women to assure that all forms of discrimination against women be eliminated; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The United States Congress is urged to immediately ratify the United Nations, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Section 3. The Convention has been ratified by 139 out of 185 United Nations member states. Additionally, Miami Dade County has adopted a resolution similar to the one proposed. The Miami Commission on the Status of Women recommends that the Commission adopt said resolution.
