RECOMMENDATION
The City of Miami Street Codesignation Committee recommends that the City of Miami
Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the street codesignation of 27 Street from
SW 37 Avenue to SW 36 Avenue as "John V. Sweeting, Sr. Way."
BACKGROUND
John Venderburg Sweeting, Sr. was a founding member of the African-American Coconut Grove
community. Early last century he purchased land north of the railroad which ran along what is now
US -1. His local prominence led to the West Grove area being called "Sweeting Town." This was a
community that played a very important role in providing a cultural infrastructure for local
African-Americans prior to desegregation in the 1960's. To this day, his efforts continue to inspire
and foster growth within the community.
