The bid of Dade Home Center, Inc., d/b/a Dade Maytag Home Appliance Center, the lowest responsive and responsible bidder pursuant to Invitation for Bids No. 01-02-084R, dated March 11, 2002, for the procurement of eight Maytag washers for the Department of Fire -Rescue, in a total amount not to exceed $8,271.60, is accepted, with funds allocated from Capital Improvement Project No. 313302, Account Code No. 289401.6.840, as funded by the Fire Assessment Fee. Funds are available from the Capital Improvement Project Number 313302, Account Code 289401.6.840, funded by the Fire Assessment. BACKGROUND The Department of Fire -Rescue uses special firefighter protective clothing in the performance of their duties. The garments are routinely soiled during firefighting and rescue operations and require specialized cleaning every six (6) months to remove foreign and flammable contaminants in accordance to the new NFPA 1581, Standard on Fire Department Infection Control Program. Currently, the Department of Fire -Rescue sends out their garments for cleaning services which results in several garments being out of commission for a length of time. By installing on - premise Maytag washer -extractors this would allow the Department to wash contaminated clothing on a routine basis after exposure to fire or body fluids. This equipment would extend the life of the protective gear by 50% as a result of thorough washing and ensure the safety of our firefighters. In addition, a cost analysis was done by the Department and the results proved that the purchase of this equipment would be more efficient, and cheaper. The bid results were zero (0) responses. Whirlpool Amana Appliances Home Gas Dolphin Gas American Propane After contacting all vendors, we found several said they never received the bid or passed the bid to their corporate office who must not have responded. Even though we solicited for "OR EQUAL" brands the demand for Stainless Steel tub with a 15" opening to fit large firefighter outer garments would eliminate all the one Maytag brand. The rebid, 01-02-084R, was resent to all vendors. This time we received only one bid from the main Maytag dealer, Dade Maytag. Furthermore, I checked with Miami -Dade County Fire Department and Miami Beach Fire Department regarding their units used and was informed that they both use Speed Queen units at all stations manufactured by Raytheon. These are the commercial units that cost between $1500.00 and $2500.00 each depending on size. So, utilizing Maytag Neptune's saves the City of Miami $500.00 minimum each. I, therefore, recommend that we accept this single bid for Maytag Washers. Thank you for your consideration to this request.
