MIS BION
The Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival in Coconut Grove, Inc., is dedicated to
recognizing, promoting and educating the residents of Miami -Dade County as well as the
tourist about the Bahamas' rich heritage. The festival is held to bring about unity and
bridge a cultural gap by building communities through the understanding of each other's
likenesses and differences.
The festival committee strives to provide an historical overview of the Bahamian culture,
the commemoration of the early Coconut Grove settlers and to introduce the music,
authentic native food specialties, artifacts and crafts that are indigenous of the island. We
are committed to educate and showcase the Royal Bahamian Police Force Band and the
Rushing Junkanoos.

HIS CRY
Feeling the need to share a rich and important culture, the Miami/Bahamas Goombay
Festival committee was formulated in the 70's to celebrate the Bahamian heritage. Many
Bahamians knew that they could express their culture through their colorful artwork,
infectious music and exuberant dancing. So the committee committed themselves to
showcase the place where many Bahamians or Bahamian descendents "call home." The
festival, in its 26`h year has grown to become the largest Black heritage festival in the
United States. The Board of Directors made up of volunteer members have provided
strong leadership and they have been very instrumental in taking the festival to new
levels since the Festival's incorporation in 1979. The Board meets continuously
throughout the year to ensure it provides a well-rounded, family oriented festival to be
held annually during the first full weekend in June.
The street festival is a historic display that features photos and letters, which document
the integral part the early Bahamians, played in settling in Miami. This display is set up
on the festival route for all to see and learn about the role the Bahamians played in
placing Miami on the map ... including being signers of the original City of Miami
Charter in 1896. This year, the Bahamas shall include a display of their history and
provide a display area that will be "Goombay's Nassau Village." This village will
include 13 booths designed to give you a reflection of the beauty of the people and their
islands.
From the Royal Police Force Band to the Junkanoos, Goombay is planned to assure that
every component of the Bahamas is represented. Partnerships continue to form with
native vendors and our tri -county vendors and the exchange of information has
formulated an unbreakable bond.
The festival has included such attractions as the junior golf tournament, sailing regattas,
fishing tournaments and extra entertainment stages. As Miami -Dade County continues to
grow, the Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival attempts to expand to meet the needs of the
consumers.
This year the festival will expand to include a week filled with activities for the entire
family. The Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival Board is committed to the community of
Coconut Grove and is grateful for the opportunity to share the lives and experiences of
the Bahamian settlers and their families.
