A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
RELATED TO THE SECOND ANNUAL "IT TAKES A
VILLAGE CONFERENCE", ORGANIZED BY THE WORLD
LITERACY CRUSADE OF FLORIDA, INC.
("ORGANIZER") TO BE HELD AT EDISON MIDDLE
SCHOOL, 6101 NORTHWEST 2' AVENUE, MIAMI,
FLORIDA, ON SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2002;
AUTHORIZING THE PROVISION OF IN-KIND
SERVICES, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $5,000;
CONDITIONING SAID AUTHORIZATION UPON THE
PROVIDER: (1) OBTAINING ALL PERMITS REQUIRED
BY LAW; (2) PAYING FOR ALL OTHER NECESSARY
COSTS OF CITY SERVICES AND APPLICABLE FEES
ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONFERENCE; (3) OBTAINING
INSURANCE TO PROTECT THE CITY IN THE AMOUNT
AS PRESCRIBED BY THE CITY MANAGER; (4)
COMPLYING WITH ALL CONDITIONS AND LIMITATIONS
AS MAY BE PRESCRIBED BY THE CITY MANAGER;
ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM AN ACCOUNT TO BE
IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY MANAGER.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The provision of in-kind services, in an
amount not to exceed $5,000, is authorized for the Second Annual
"It Takes A Village Conference," organized by the World Literacy
Crusade of Florida, Inc. ("Organizer") to be held at Edison
Middle School, 6101 Northwest 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, on
Saturday, April 27, 2002, with funds allocated from an account to
be identified by the City Manager.

Section 2. The herein authorization is conditioned upon
the Organizer: (1) obtaining all permits required by law; (2)
paying for all other necessary costs of City services and
applicable fees associated with the Conference; (3) obtaining
insurance to protect the City in the amount as prescribed by the
City Manager; (4) complying with all conditions and limitations
as may be prescribed by the City Manager.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.11
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 25th day of April ,2002.

1� If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become
effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was
passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it
shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by
the City Commission.

Dear Commissioner Teele:
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual "It Takes A Village
Conference" to be held on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Miami Edison Middle School, located at
6101 NW 2 Avenue, Miami, FL.
The 2001 "It Takes A Village Conference" was a huge success with more than 500 students,
parents, educators and service providers in attendance. With your support we can reach an even
wider audience this year. The Miami -Dade Cultural Affairs Council, Miami Dade Housing
Agency and Miami Dade County Public Schools have already pledged their support.
The purpose of the "It Takes A Village Conference" is to strengthen community pride and
promote unity and brotherly love by utilizing the Nguzo Saba's 7 Principles of Unity; Self
Determination; Collective Work and Responsibility; Cooperative Economics; Purpose;
Creativity and Faith.
The Conference will feature an opening plenary session and several concurrent interactive
community and family workshops that conclude with recommendations and implementation
strategies from each workshop group. Workshop topics will include, Educating Minority and
At -risk Students; Anger Management and Conflict & Violence Reduction (students and adults)
Building Community Leadership; and How to Live with AIDS in the 21' Century. The
conference will also feature food, arts and crafts vendors, games, rides and entertainment for the
entire family.
