BACKGROUND The Miami Police Department instituted a program in July 1990 to encourage the youth of our community to "do the right thing." This program rewards youth for being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in education. The program also allows children living in high -crime areas to interact with uniformed police officers in non -confrontational settings establishing positive associations and enhancing mutual respect. The program directly impacts approximately 9,000 children annually through its awards program and hundreds more through community events, activities and projects. Since its inception, the "Do The Right Thing" program has grown by attracting a number of influential sponsors. Major sponsors include: The Miami Herald, British Airways, WTVJ-NBC 6, Carnival Cruise Lines, Publix, Verizon Wireless, Fowler White Burnett Law Firm, and Don Carlin, have been instrumental in the advertising and promotion of the program.
