Funding is available from the Department of Police General Operating Budget, Account Code No. 001000.290201.6.875. BACKGROUND The Department of Police has analyzed the bids received pursuant to Bid No. 01-02-006R for the provision of police service dogs and supplemental training. Five (5) invitations for bid were mailed and two (2) responses were received. Metro Dade K9 Guard Dogs Services and Police Service Dogs, Inc., submitted the two lowest responsible and responsive bids with the lowest unit price per item, on a spot market basis, as needed, and are, therefore, recommended for the award. The Police Department's service dogs are an effective law enforcement tool. The dogs are used to search buildings, perimeters, etc., for suspects who are hiding. The dog's sensitive nose allows it to locate the offender long before a human is able, making it safer for police officers. The police service dogs will be purchased on an as needed basis, to replace dogs that become disabled due to medical reasons, retirements and other emergencies.
