RESOLUTION NO. 02— 373
A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
AUTHORIZING A GRANT AWARD, IN THE AMOUNT OF
$10,000, FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMITTEE
OF DADE HERITAGE TRUST IN SUPPORT OF THE
NINTH ANNUAL COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE HONORING
AFRICAN AMERICANS BURIED IN THE CITY
CEMETERY; ALLOCATING SAID FUNDS FROM AN
ACCOUNT TO BE IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY
MANAGER; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO
EXECUTE THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS, IN A FORM
ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY ATTORNEY, FOR THE
GRANT.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. A grant award, in the amount of $10,000, is
authorized for the African American Committee of Dade Heritage
Trust in support of the Ninth Annual Commemorative Service
honoring African Americans buried in the City Cemetery, with
funds allocated from an account to be identified by the City
Manager.

Section 2. The City Manager is authorized!' to execute
the necessary documents, in a form acceptable to the City
Attorney, for the grant.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.2/

including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City
Charter and Code provisions.

passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it
shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by
the City Commission.

Because of the 6gu ficaace of'this historic and momentous occasion, we are inviting the City of
Miami to co-sponsor this event as you have done in the palet. We are also addng you, the Mayor,
and the City Commissioners to lead the proonskmL We will be honoring two of the African
American incorporators of the city of Miami, ?*- M T. hfitc ell, and A& Antis Willis. We will
also honor Mr. George Kelly, a niusiaw with the Ink Spots. We would appreciate a proclamation
from the City in honor of our honorees. Enclosed is a list of needed items and our proposed budget
which we would Bloc the City to waivetsponsor.
The Committee, is rewriting help in obtaining the required permits and poliice escorts for the
procession [Dube. The prooession will travel north an Third Avenue to Twentieth Street, Fast on
Twentieth Street to 14liand Avenue, and South on Hjun, Avenue to the Cematesy. At the
eondoston of the service, the procession will need a police escort bank from the Cemetery to the
rhumb. We would also bloc to have the honor guards of the Pdm and Fin Departments as a part

celebration of Miami's most historic cemetery.
Honored this year will be the memory of M.T.
Mitchell and Artis Willis, incorporators of the
City of Miami, and George Kelly, musician for
the Ink Spots. See the beautiful restoration of
this landmark and its botanical treasures and
applaud the winners of the student essay
contest on "Why I Am Proud of My Heritage."

Join Miami Design Preservation League
(MDPL) for a reception, book signing and
presentation on Dade Heritage Trust's new
book, Miami's Historic Neighborhoods,
edited by Becky Roper Matkov. The new Art
Deco Museum, operated by MDPL at 1001
Ocean Drive in Miami Beach and located in
the 1954 Ocean Front Auditorium designed
by architect Leonard Glasser, will feature the
exhibit "Salute to Nautical Art Deco," which
will be on display until March 30. This event
is part of the City of Miami Beach's Second

If you have never experienced the beauty of
Arch Creek Park, it's time you visited! The
historic park covers eight acres of natural
hammock and was once the home of a
