A RESOLUTION OF TIME MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING AN IN-KIND GRANT TO DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC., IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $424, TO COVER COSTS OF POLICE SERVICES AND PERMIT FEES REQUIRED FOR THE "INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE -DST FIGHTS HIV/AIDS" EVENT SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 9, 2002, WHEREBY PARTICIPANTS OF SAID EVENT WILL TRAVEL FROM MIAMI CITY HALL TO THE JUNCTION BETWEEN NORTHWEST 27TH AVENUE AND NORTHWEST 36" STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City Manager is authorizedL/ to provide an in-kind grant to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., in an amount not to exceed $424, to cover costs of police services and permit fees required for the "International Day of Service -DST Fights HIV/AIDS" event scheduled for March 9, 2002, whereby participants of said event will travel from Miami City Hall to the junction between Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street, Miami, Florida. i� The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by the City Attorney, including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and Code provisions. Miami, FL 331.32 Dear Chief Martinez: i Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a non-profit organization with a worldwide membership of over 190,000 college-educated and professional women committed to public service. Because our organizational thrust is public service, we express our values in building community projects for the public good, On Saturday, March 9, 2002, all 900 -plus Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. chapters throughout the United States and abroad will conduct an International Day of Service to address the plight of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in African American communities throughout the world. This international collaborative effort is being held as a part of our sorority's current initiative, Summit V- Health and Healing "Let It Continue, Promoting Health and Wellness on HILIAIDS. " Recently released statistics show that there is a disproportionate occurrence of the AIDS disease among the African American communities in Miami -Dade County, In Miami -Dade County, Florida, four (4) Delta Chapters will be working together on this International Day of Service to raise awareness of how individuals in our community can assist in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. As part of our sorority's awareness campaign we will sponsor a county -wide, neighborhood HIV/AIDS information distribution walk covering 3 specifically targeted areas in South, Central and North Miami -"Dade County. At the same time as our walk, our sorority will be sponsoring a free health fair at the Northside Shopping Center located at NW 27 Avenue and 79`h Street. Following the walk, we plan to have a caravan of cars leaving from each area and converging at Northside Shopping Center so that walkers can participate in a culminating HIV/AIDS rally also being sponsored by our sorority. 02M- 253 Mr. Raul Martinez Page 2 February 13, 2002 Our sorority is asking the City of Miami Police Department to support our efforts by providing in-kind services for the necessary police escorts from Coconut Grove free of charge. We anticipate approximately 20 cars participating in the caT,avan. from the Central meeting location at the City of Miami City Hall parking lot, 3500 Pan American Drive, Dinner Key, in Coconut Grove.
