HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-02-0220J-02-211. 3/7/02 RESOLUTION NO. 02— 220 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO ENACT HOUSE/SENATE BILLS HB 1361/SB 1418, WHICH, IF ADOPTED, WILL RELIEVE COASTAL COMMUNITIES OF EXCESSIVE WINDSTORM INSURANCE RATES; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, the Florida Windstorm Underwriting Association has proposed a rate structure that would significantly increase rates paid by residents of the City of Miami and other coastal communities; and WHEREAS, the proposed rate structure does not adequately consider the City of Miami's building codes, emergency response systems and other elements of local loss prevention and mitigation; and WHEREAS, affordable insurance premiums, fairly based on the risk factors and loss prevention efforts, directly relate to the economic vitality of Miami; and CITY C0=48"N MEET= bf MAP 0 7 2002 Regolation. NJP. 02- 220 WHEREAS, House/Senate Bills HB 1361/SB 1418, sponsored by House Representative Sally Heyman and Senator Ron Silver, promotes fairness in rates, ability to challenge discriminating practices, protection of policy providers who offer affordable windstorm coverage, and greater consumer participation in Florida Windstorm Underwriting Association rate formula setting; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Legislature of the State of Florida is urged to enact House/Senate Bills HB 1361/SB 1418„ which., if adopted, will relieve coastal communities of excessive windstorm insurance rates. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Jeb Bush, the President of the Florida Senate, the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Senator Ron Silver, Representative Sally Heyman, and all members of the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
