BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. City Commission Meeting of January 24, 2002 Resolution Number 02-84 To 4alter ble ity Cfe!F' City erk, • • CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA 16 INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM Mayor and M DATE: ers November 27, 2001 FILE C 155ia SUBJECT: Community Relations Board REFERENCES: January 24, 2002 Agenda ENCLOSURE& List of Members, Resolution The Community Relations Board was created to (1) To serve in an advisory capacity to the City Commission; (2) to foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect among all economic, social, religious and ethnic groups in the City of Miami; (3) to make studies in the field of human relations; (4) to attempt to act as conciliator in controversies involving community relations; (5) to cooperate in the development of educational programs dedicated to the improvement of community relations with, and to enlist the support of, civic leaders, civic, religious, veterans, labor, industrial, commercial and eleemosynary groups; and private agencies engaged in the inculcation of ideals of tolerance, cultural respect and understanding; (6) to prepare studies, and have studies made, in the field of community relations, and to prepare and disseminate reports of such studies; (7) to recommend to the Mayor, Commissioners, and the City Manager such ordinances to carry out the purposes of the provisions set forth herein; (8) to submit an annual report to the Mayor, Commissioners, and the City Manager; and (9) to make recommendations regarding grants and donations on behalf of the City from foundations and others for the purpose of carrying out the above listed functions, subject to approval by the City Commission. Seven appointments are needed at this time: • Mayor Diaz has two appointments for: 1. vacant seat created when Bishop Victor T. Curry resigned; 2. seat currently held by Torris Cooper, who had been appointed by former Mayor Carollo and whose term expires January 31, 2002 • Commissioner Gonzalez has two nominations for vacant seats created by the resignations of the two members who had been nominated by former Commissioner Gort: 1. Ed Pidermann 2. Al Cotera • Commissioner Teele has two nominations for two members whose terms expire January 31, 2002: 1. Anthony Robbins 2. Rev. Richard Bennett • Commissioner Sanchez has one nomination for seat currently held by Beatriz Menendez Aponte, who recently accepted a position in the Miami -Dade County School System. City Code Sec. 2-884(e) states that employees of Miami -Dade County, Florida, or any municipality therein other than a City of Miami employee, shall not serve on or be appointed to any Board of the City of Miami, unless the City Commission waives this restriction by a four-fifths affirmative vote of its membership and the employee is a resident of the City of Miami. Beatriz Menendez -Aponte was appointed to the Community Relations Board by Commissioner Sanchez. She just recently brought to the attention of the Board that she has accepted a position in the Dade County School System.
