The girl was in the custody of police in Orange, Texas, on Sunday, a day after, she was abducted from this North Flor- ida town about 485 miles away, authorities said. Ernie Paul Dugas, 30, is charged with kidnapping, and authorities have issued a war- rant for his arrest. Baldwin said he and a dep- uty were driving to Texas to pick up the girl and bring her home. Baldwin said ,there was "some sexual battery" during the girl's 14 -hour abduction. "She's been through a heck of an ordeal and we're going to keep her safe," Baldwin said Sunday in an interview on his cellular phone. The girl's name is being withheld because of the alleged sexual battery. The teen was abducted Sat- urday morning when she in Teyns answered the door at her homes , The stranger grabbed the girl and forced her into his car, police said. He allowed her to use his cellphone while they were at a rest stop, shortly after they had crossed the border from Louisi- ana into Texas, police said. The girl called a relative in Florida, who contacted the authorities. Police in Orange found the girl alone at the rest stop, about 14 hours after she was abducted, police said. The state issued an alert for the girl using radio and televi- sion emergency airwaves across Texas to broadcast notices of child abductions. 2 ride waves in rememberance The Associated Press Two personal watercraft riders roared away from Key West on Sunday on a 1,600 -mile journey bound for New York City to honor victims of the Sept. II attacks. Gilles Dandrieux and Shawn Alladio left Key West's Smoth- ers Beach. They are scheduled to arrive at the Statue of Liberty on Sept. 11. "This is our way of being part of what happened," said Dandrieux of Miami Beach, an extreme sports athlete. "We go to pay our respects and pray for lives that were. lost " Alladio, of Tustin, Calif., is a personal watercraft instructor for law enforcement and rescue agencies, including the New York City Police Department's Emergency Services Unit. The pair intend to ride their Wave Runners approximately six hours each day. As well as commemorating the attacks, the voyage is to raise funds for the Brain Trust at Miami Children's Hospital.
