con Puerto Rico por
$4.000 millones
Paris, (Bloomberg) — Suez SA, la
segunda compaiiia de aguas del
mundo, ha ganado un contrato del
Gobierno de Puerto Rico por valor
de $4.000 millones para suministrar
servicios de agua durante diez anos,
el mayor contrato de la historia, de
estas caracteristicas.
La compania francesa, que tam-
bien ha anunciado un incremento de
las ventas del primer trimestre del
9,7 por ciento, suministrara agua po-
table y se encargara de Ia gestion
de las aguas residuales de la Isla ca-
ribena, segun ha anunciado el por-
tavoz del grupo Antoine Lenoir.
El contrato entre Suez y el Es-
tado puertorriqueno es el mayor
acuerdo entre un Gobierno muni-
cipal y una empresa privada para
la gestion de los servicios de agua.
Por volumen anual de ventas, el
contrato es cinco veces mayor que
el acuerdo entre Vivendi Environ-
nement SA y el estado norteame-
ricano de Indianapolis, valorado
en $1.500 millones y por un periodo
de 20 anos, el mayor contrato fir-
mado por una ciudad estadouni-
dense.
"Es eminentemente positivo",
dijo Olivier Bussiere, responsible
de gestion de fondos en empresas
de Interepargne, la mayor gestora
de fondos de pensiones para em-
pleados en Francia. "Es parte de
la tendencia de privatizacion de
los sistemas de aguas. en todo el
mundo".
Suez suministra agua a 115 mi-
llones de personas en 130 paises y
gestiona el desecho de aguas resi-
duales de 74 millones de personas
y 350.000 empresas en 30 paises. El
grupo galo es tambien una de las
10 compaMas de electricidad pri-
vadas mas importantes. Las ac-
tividades de electricidad y gas na-
tural generan dos terceras partes
de las ventas totales de Suez.
Beneficios
Este tipo de contratos, tomo el
que acaba de adjudicar el Gobier-
no de Puerto Rico, permite al Es-
tado conservar la propiedad de los
sistemas de aguas al contratar el
servicio de empresas para la ges-
tion de las redes. Aproximada-
mente un 5 por ciento del mereado
de aguas mundial esti gestionado
por empresas, segun manifesto
Suez.
