Mr Joe Sanchez
District Commisioner #3
City of Miami
Dear Joe:
I hope all is well with you and I must say that it was a pleasure meeting with you and sharing thoughts.
As you are aware it was a little over a month ago, on February 3rd , that we met at the offices of the Mayor
of Miami -Dade, Mr. Many Diaz, in order to present and discuss the creation of a monument in
remembrance of all those who perished on September lith at the World Trade Center, a copy of which was
left with Mr. Irain Gonzalez, advisor to the office of the mayor.
We feel that the development of such a project within the zone under your authority is of extreme
importance since it would not only create a profound image nationally and most certainly within this
community, but it would also serve as a reflection of your leadership within this area. In addition to this,
we also feel that a project of this nature would go beyond the scope of being an Hispanic monument and it
would reflect the inner feeling of all of us, Hispanics and non-hispanics, and as people of this great nation,
toward such a horrendous crime that still affects the world.
During this meeting it was agreed that it was better to have your office present this project, since it would
allow for appropriate allocation of all the necessary funds for the construction of this monument. It could
even be inserted within the renovation funds allocated already.
We recommend that it be located at: SW 1P Avenue ("El Paseo de Los Martires"), which we consider an
ideal location. Even though there are different monuments in the area we feel that none brings together,
from a symbolic point of view, the nature of the community as a whole as this one would.
The WTC monument will be a symbol of a community, and a country, that will be remembered by future
generations and we are confident that you will serve as its representative in the most dignified manner.
Pedro Damian
