Home My WebLink AboutR-03-0827J-03-667 7/17/03 RESOLUTION NO. 8'7 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION STRONGLY URGING THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION TO RECOMMEND TO THE DEPARTMENT OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY THAT THE U.S. NAVY AIRCRAFT CARRIER "ORISKANY" BE DEPLOYED AS AN ARTIFICIAL REEF IN THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AREA TO ENHANCE AND AUGMENT MIAMI-DADE COUNTY'S SUCCESSFUL ARTIFICIAL REEF PROGRAM; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO CONVEY TO THOSE INDIVIDUALS PROVIDING FEDERAL LOBBYIST SERVICES FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI THAT THE CITY COMMISSION CONSIDERS THIS ISSUE TO BE OF HIGH PRIORITY; AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is strongly urged to recommend to the Department of the United States Navy that the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier "Oriskany" be deployed as an artificial reef in the Miami -Dade CITY COMMISSION MEETING Of, J Ll ! 1 7 2003 Resolution No. 03- 817 County area to enhance and augment Miami -Dade County's successful artificial reef program. Section 2. The City Manager is directed to convey to those individuals providing federal lobbyist services to the City of Miami that the City Commission considers this issue to be of high priority. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Acting Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Hansford T. Johnson, Governor Jeb Bush, Lieutenant Governor Toni Jennings, all members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and U.S. House of Representatives Ileana Ross-Lehtinen and Kendrick Meek. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.!' �i if the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. if the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission. I know you realize that the final decision about the disposition of any military vessel rests with the federal agencies responsible for them. We also feel certain that the Oriskany represents an indication of a change in federal management of obsolete ships and the first of many decisions we face about the disposition of combatant naval vessels as artificial reefs. You may know that we are developing a strategic plan for the state artificial reef program and have been holding hearings around the state to obtain comments about the current direction of the program. We will meet with your counterparts in Northwest Florida later in the year and then provide the results to the Commission during our November meeting in Key Largo.
