A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SINCEREST
CONDOLENCES ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
AND ITS CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS
OF CELIA CRUZ, THE GRANDE DAME OF CUBAN
MUSIC, UPON HER UNTIMELY DEATH.
WHEREAS, Celia Cruz, one of the Latin world's living
legends who was the musical voice of the homeland to Cubans
throughout the world, passed away on July 16, 2003; and
WHEREAS, as an international star, she stood for those
steadfast exiles who could not bear the pain of their lost
motherland; and
WHEREAS, Celia Cruz grew from a poor Havana girl into an
entertainment icon who broke all barriers for Latin music; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Cruz' music inspired the modern Latin Sound
and she was known as the "Queen of Salsa"; and

WHEREAS, even though a world -renown idol, she was a friend
and charming to all her fans; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Cruz made more than 76 records, won two
Grammys and three Latin Grammys, but her records were considered
contraband in Castro's Cuba, a fact that bothered her only
because she was not permitted to return to Cuba for her mother's
burial; and
WHEREAS, because of her contributions she was granted
honorary degrees from Yale University, the University of Miami,
and Florida International University, and was also honored with
a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, California, and a Latin
Star in the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, Celia Cruz considered Miami her second home and
requested that her body be flown to Miami for a memorial; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission, on behalf
of the City of Miami and its citizens, to express its deepest
sympathy to the family and friends of Celia Cruz;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:

Section 1. On behalf of the citizens of the City of
Miami, the City Commission conveys to the family and friends of
Celia Cruz, the Grande Dame of Cuban Music, its deepest sympathy
and sincerest condolences upon her untimely death.
