Little Street File No. 13151 Item RE. 12 on the January 12, 2023, City Commission Meeting Agenda proposes to co -designate Northwest 11 Terrace from Northwest 6 Avenue to Northwest 1 Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Larry C. Little Street." The Legislation is being substituted to correct an inadvertent error in the address. CC. LITTLE STREET;" FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, Lawrence Chatmon Little was born on November 2, 1945 in Miami, Florida and grew up in Miami's Overtown Community; an WHEREAS, He received his formal education at the City's Black historic schools including Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School, Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, and Booker T. Washington High School; and WHEREAS, After graduating high school, Larry attended Bethune-Cookman College (now University) and was a two-time selection to the All -Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference where his Wildcats posted winning records. While coaching at Beth une-Cookman, Larry won two Mid -Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships; and WHEREAS, After college he began his professional football career in 1967 with the San Diego Chargers and was then traded to the Miami Dolphins in 1969 where he earned the starting right guard position and played a role in the team's running game of the 1970's; and WHEREAS, Mr. Little was instrumental in the Dolphins advancing to three consecutive Super Bowls in 1971, 1972 and 1973; and WHEREAS, The 1972 championship season remains as the only undefeated NFL champions in modern history; and WHEREAS, Larry played 12 seasons with the Dolphins where he earned All -Pro honors 6 times, was a Pro Bowl selection on 5 occasions, and the 1971-1973 AFC Offensive Lineman of the year; Coach Don Shula called him "a real inspiration, not just for the way he performs but also for his influence on our younger players." Little was named first -team All -NFL from 1971 through 1975 and again in 1977. He also was named second -team All -NFL in 1978 and All -AFC five times; and WHEREAS, Amongst his many accomplishments and recognitions, Little served as captain of the Dolphins for 10 years; in 1993 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; he was the first Miami Dolphin player from Florida to be inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame; in 2004 Larry was inducted into the Booker T. Washington Athletic Hall of Fame; in 2013 he was inducted into the Black College Hall of fame; and in 2021, Larry was inducted into the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) Hall of Fame; and Larry has received over 250 community service awards; and WHEREAS, Following his prolific football career, Little's passion turned to his South Florida Community and its youth where for 15 years he and his partners, Freddie Woodson and Rudy Barber conducted the Larry Little Gold Coast Summer Camp for underprivileged and marginalized children living in Miami -Dade County; and WHEREAS, Little's continued community involvement included efforts through the Larry Little Foundation which supports inner city youth through college scholarships and numerous other non-profit organizations; and WHEREAS, It is not possible to list all of Little's contributions to Miami and the South Florida Community without recognizing the impact he has had on so many people within our community; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to honor Larry C. Little's numerous contributions to the City of Miami by co -designating Northwest 14th Street between 7th Avenue and 1st Avenue, Miami, Florida, as "Larry C. Little Street"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and finding contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission by 4/5ths vote hereby co -designates that portion of Northwest 14th Street between 7th Avenue and 1st Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Larry C. Little Street." Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami - Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; and the United States Postal Service. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
