Teele, Jr. Commissioner 1mv DATE : July 17, 2003 FILE SUBJECT: Sponsorship for the Symposium on Trade and Commerce in Haiti By this memorandum, I am respectfully requesting to discuss the following resolution as a pocket item: A MOTION DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO WORK WITH THE DISTRICT 5 OFFICE TO FACILITATE THE SPONSORSHIP FOR "THE SYMOPOSIUM ON TRADE & COMMERCE IN HAITI" SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2003, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $3,000 BASED ON AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS, PROVIDED THAT FUNDS PAY FOR- LODGING, TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING COSTS AND FURTHER PROVIDING THAT SAID FUNDS BE EXPENDED WITHIN THE MIAMI CITY LIMITS; ADDITIONALLY AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO PROVIDE INHOUSE (IN-KIND) GRAPHICS AND PRINTING SERVICES TO SUPPORT THIS ACTIVITY FROM WITHIN THE AVAILABLE BUDGET RESOURCES. Given the fact that your company is held in high esteem by the Haitian community, we are seeking sponsorship from City of Miami Board of Commossioners for this event. The purpose of this symposium is to illustrate the economic opportunities for conducting business in and with Haiti, a $500 million dollar per year market. The symposium will feature several speakers who will comment on various aspects of South Florida businesses conducting business in and with Haiti. Some of the proposed speakers include the President of Association of Haitian Industries - Mrs. Marie -Claude Bayard; the former Haitian Minister of Tourism — Mrs. Maryse Penette-Kedan; Chamber of Commerce for the Southeast Region of Haiti Representative — Mrs. Michelle Crane; Board Member of World Trade Center: Miami - Mr. Denis Arden; the Director General of Commerce & Industry in Haiti — Mrs. Gabriel Zephir; U.S. Representative, District 17 Florida — the Honorable Kendrick Meek; the Haitian Consul for Miami — Mr. Guy Victor; U.S. Representative Kendrick Meek; prominent businessman Dr. Rudolph Moise. Each speaker will answer questions from the audience after their presentation. Local dignitaries and community leaders will also be in attendance. This symposium is slated . as one of the key events commemorating Haiti's bicentennial celebration in South Florida. The goal is to provide information regarding the viability of doing business in and with Haiti, a $500 million market with potential for immediate growth.
