Dear Mr. Boetes:
It was a pleasure to discuss your exciting initiative to create a maritime museum in Miami. We
certainly agree that the rich maritime history of South Florida is worthy of an interactive and
educational institution, such as the one you so enthusiastically propose. We welcome your
interest in incorporating the Coast Guard as a significant portion of the museum and are eager to
cooperate with you to make your vision a reality.
As I am sure you are well aware, the process that must be undertaken to see your proposal come
to fruition will be highly political. As a representative of the federal government the Coast
Guard must remain apolitical. Therefore, we must stop short of providing an official
endorsement for your plan.
What we can offer in support is to provide the necessary information and points of contact for
further coordination. This includes assisting in the identification of and application for the
donation of a retired Coast Guard vessel, as well as education and guidance in the regulatory
requirements enforced by the Coast Guard for the type of museum you are proposing.
I have tasked my public affairs officer, Lieutenant Tony Russell, with assisting you in your
efforts to locate and gain custody of a retired Coast Guard vessel. He will also be able to assist
you in the historical research that will be necessary to pursue your proposal. I have asked
Captain James Watson, Captain of the Port of Miami, to make himself available in regard to your
regulatory inquiries as this program moves forward
We wish you great success with your worthwhile plan.
Sincerely,
O S. CARMICHAEL

Dear Frans:
Thank you for taking the time to write and share your interest in establishing the Miami -Dade
Historical Maritime Museum.
Because this is a matter in which your county officials have primary jurisdiction, I have contacted
the Miami -Dade County Commission and have asked them to review this situation. I am certain
that they appreciate being made aware of your proposal, and I am confident that a direct response
will be provided to you as soon as possible.
If you have not done so already, I encourage you to contact Mr. Anthony Atwood at
305/225-9165 to discuss this matter. Mr. Atwood has been active in establishing a museum at
Naval Air Station Richmond to recognize its history as a blimp base during World War H. Mr.
Atwood is in a unique position to offer counsel on soliciting the interest of local officials and the
community in your efforts to develop the Miami -Dade Historical Maritime Museum.
Please know that my staff and I stand ready to assist you with other issues in which federal
guidelines or potential federal policy applies. Best wishes for success in this endeavor.
With kind regards,
Sincerely,

I was delighted to receive your latest materials describing the progress of establishing a
floating maritime museum in downtown Miami. The creation of a Historical Maritime
Museum on the shoreline of Bicentennial Park would complement the ongoing efforts to
redevelop our urban core — a subject recently highlighted by the South Florida CEO
magazine. If successful, all our communities in South Florida would benefit greatly.
Furthermore, given the events of September 11, 2001, it is most fitting that our
community has a venue in which to honor Miami's role in the defense of this nation. A
maritime museum would be a reminder of those whose past efforts novV- allow us to live
in freedom. Therefore, I urge those who have authority over the proposed site to give
supportive consideration to this outstanding proposal.

Dear Mr. Boetes,
It was a pleasure meeting with you last week and discussing your vision of a
Maritime Museum to be established in the deep water slip immediately north of
AmericanAirlines Arena.
The HEAT Group and AmericanAirlines Arena wholeheartedly support your
efforts, as we believe that this is not only an appropriate use of the waterfront consistent
with the plans for a "Museum Park", but also represents a significant contribution to
honoring the dedicated men and women of the armed forces in an educational manner.
We wish you the best of luck with your fund raising efforts and with the various
approvals required from the authorities having jurisdiction.

On behalf of Miami -Dade County Public Schools, I would like to lend our support to
your concept to develop a Historical Maritime Museum in the Bicentennial Park area of
downtown Miami. Creating a living museum on board an authentic ship would be a
wonderful addition to the unique character of our waterfront community. It would
provide a great focus to our growing downtown, and add an element of history to our
relatively young town.
As an educational experience, our students of all ages would benefit from tours of the
ship, and follow up classroom activities to support their learning. From history lessons to
math conceptual experiences, from language arts activities to interactive technology, we
can envision a world of rich experiences available for our students through the museum.
Learning is no longer just between the four walls of a classroom, and your concept would
demonstrate the value of real world experiences.
We would be delighted to share your dream with our students, and we look forward to
seeing your museum become part of our Miami history.

Your proposal to create the first Historical Maritime Museum in Downtown Miami
is an innovative concept that has the potential of being beneficial to our
community in terms of it being an educational asset as well as complimenting
our attractions portfolio which serves locals and visitors alike.
The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau is supportive of the Historical
Maritime Museum concept. The museum if successful, stands to be a win-win
for our community. It stands to add to the synergy of the already begun project
of rejuvenating Downtown and the Biscayne Boulevard corridor.
