DISCUSSION ITEM:
At the 6/13/02 Commission Meeting, the City Manager was directed to come back to the
City Commission with recommendations for supplemental plaques to be installed on
newly constructed City buildings acknowledging the "Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond"
funding and the "Homeland Defense/Neighborhood Improvement Bond" funding when
appropriate.
On all significant capital improvement building projects, the City usually provides a
rectangular bronze dedication plaque permanently affixed to the structure. The typical
prototype dedication plaque contains the City logo, name of the project, dedication date,
and the names of the Mayor, members of the City Commission and Chief Administrator
(formerly City Manager). Between the project name and the date, the statement
"Dedicated to the Citizens of the City of Miami" is often added. Also, the names of the
architect and contractor are included. The plaques are custom made for each project.
When appropriate, it is recommended that the funding source be acknowledged at the
bottom of the plaque as follows:
"Funded by the Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Program" or "Funded by the City of
Miami Homeland Defense/Neighborhood Improvement Bond Program."
Attached is a sketch, as well as an actual sized facsimile, of a typical dedication plaque
with the funding source acknowledgement added. City dedication plaques are usually
12" to 14" x 20" to 24" in size with a leather texture background and single line border. A
supplemental plaque with the funding source acknowledgement is not recommended
because of the added cost and the potential for removal.
Subject to your suggestions and recommendation, standards for dedication plaques can
be implemented.
