That the City of Miami takes great pride in honoring the perseverance and fortitude that characterize the noble fights for independence and self-government of our hemispheric nations, countries whose fates would intertwine with that of the United States of America in important ways; That the People of Panama severed their ties with Colombia one hundred years ago and entered into an agreement with the U.S. government to construct The Panama Canal, a cross-country corridor to link the waters of two great oceans and provide more timely passage for commercial and recreational sea travel; That the early Independence struggles in Panama, in its separation from Spain, owed their fruition to the Great Liberator, Simon Bolivar, himself a "Mulatto" of Euro -African descent, who fought for unity among several nations of South and Central America, successfully ending slavery in many of them, and convening, unsuccessfully, a meeting in Panama for the purpose of this unification; That Miami citizens with roots in Panama will honor these independence struggles through centennial celebrations on November 15, 2003, events highlighting the November 3 centennial date which comes one week before commemoration of the country's 182 years of independence from Spain on November 10; That City of Miami support for this important celebration is particularly significant for this hemispheric partner who brings into our city a strong and fierce sense of freedom and the antiquity, beauty and strength of a traditional culture: Meetin hoYethe 'e Occasion of the Regular Commission o the Ci o Miami Januar 2003 and f f ' .ry in Celebration o, f' the On oing Social, , biplomatic and Cultura Ties between the United States and Panama Be It Resolved: ' That the officials of the City of Miami, on behalf of our citizens, pay tribute to Panama and its people as they approach the centennial celebration of their independence and herein join their official representatives, Her Excellency Mireya Moscoso, President of Panama and Mrs. Ivonne Young, President of the National Committee of the Centenary and Minister of the Presidency, in honoring their ongoing commitment to self- government and continuing struggles for freedom and democracy; That officials of the City of Miami authorize support in the form of facilities to host the November 15 celebration. 03- 128
