FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM DATE : January 15, 2002 FILE Su6JECT; Waiver of Off -Duty Police Surcharge Fees — REFERENCES : SiwpsomBruckheimer Production Company ENCL0$VRE$: The Mayor's Office of Festivals, Film, Arts, Culture, and Eutertsinment (F.F.A.C.E.) respectfully recommends that the City of Miami Commission grant a waiver of the Off -Duty Police Surcharge Fees, totaling approximately $31,000.00, to SimpsonBruckheimer Production Company, BACKGROUND' In a letter to the Mayor dated December 10, 2042, the producers of the Sony/Colombia Pictures feature film, "Bad Boys 2 ", requested that the city consider waiving the Off Duty Police Surcharge Fees associated with the hiring of off-duty police officers utilized during the malting of the feature film "Bad Boys2 ". Similar charges typically assessed by other local governments, namely Miami Dade and City of Miami Beach, were waived. The surcharge owed by the production company totals approximately $31,000.00. Overtime paid to City of Miami police officers during the making of the film alone totaled $325,000.00. The majority of the feature film (approximately 55 of the total 84 days of principle photography) was shot in the City of Miami. The cumulative economic impact of both the positive exposure and the dollars spent wiftn the local economy (raring the making of the film far exceed the face value of the waiver being requested.
