Ll • Ft BLACK POLICE PRECINCT & COURTHOUS MUSEUM RESTORATION HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Located at 470 NW 1 11h Street in Overtown, the City of Miami Black Police Precinct was built in 1950, during segregation, for the black officers who were employed by the City of Miami Police Department. It was unique, in that it had a courtroom on the second floor, where Judge Lawson A. Thomas, the first Black Judge in the South, presided along with a Black Court Clerk, and a Black Bailiff. During its peak, 85 Black Officers worked out of the Precinct. In 1962, it closed and the officers were integrated with the Main Station at IIth Street and Northwest 12`h Avenue. Today, thanks to the vision and sacrifice of the City of Miami Retired Police Officers Community Development Association, and total support from Commissioner Arthur Teele and the City's Administration, the former Precinct building is about to be restored into a full service museum and tutoring center with outreach programs serving children and citizens in the community. Area schools include Booker T. Washington High, Dunbar Elementary, Douglas Elementary, and Phyllis Wheatley Elementary Schools. SCOPE OF WORK: The project consists of the furnishing of all labor, materials and equipment for the historical restoration of the existing abandoned building to its original condition. The scope of work includes structural repairs and enhancements as required, new mechanical, electrical, light safety systems, plumbing, roofing, windows, doors, as well as an elevator for handicapped access.
