A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, CODESIGNATING THAT
PORTION OF NORTHWEST 5TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 17TH STREET TO
NORTHWEST 19TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "MARGARET JANE THOMPSON
MACKEY WAY"; FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY
OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES.
WHEREAS, Margaret Jane Thompson Mackey ("Ms. Mackey") was born in Eleuthera,
Bahamas; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mackey devoted herself to her community and her church; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mackey was called "Sister Mackey" by her church members and the
local community; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mackey would cook dinners and sell them to raise money for her
church, the Church of God of Prophecy which was located at Northwest 17t" Street and 51"
Court; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mackey was encouraged by her church members to open a restaurant
so that all could enjoy her delicious meals; and
WHEREAS, in 1929 Ms. Mackey opened the "Seafood Cafe" at 401 Northwest 171n
Street, Miami, Florida, and as a result earned the nickname "Seafood" from her customers; and
WHEREAS, the Seafood Cafe, a small family establishment, was one of the first
Bahamian restaurants in Miami; and
WHEREAS, the restaurant, open 7 days a week from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m., served many
people who did not have the money to pay for their food and as a result brought friendliness and
warmth to Northwest 171" Street and 41" Court; and
WHEREAS, her motto was "You've tried the rest now try the best", and her
neighborhood casual dining establishment served people from all walks of life, local churches,
schools and social groups; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mackey served the Booker T. Washington football team meals after
games; and
WHERES, Bahamian tourists would visit whenever they traveled to Miami; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mackey was a generous soul always helping others and feeding the
body and spirit; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Margaret Jane Thompson Mackey by
codesignating that portion of Northwest 51" Avenue from Northwest 17 Street to Northwest 191h
Street, located in City Commission 1, as "Margaret Jane Thompson Mackey Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and finding contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates that portion of Northwest 5th
Avenue from Northwest 17 Street to Northwest 191" Street as "Margaret Jane Thompson
Mackey Way".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Public Works and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County
Department of Transportation and Public Works; and the United States Postal Service, and, if a
State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six Secretary for sign
installation within the newly designated roadways.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
