HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-22-0404City of Miami Resolution R-22-0404 alldl 11 li.Rl I + Legislation File Number: 12745 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 10/27/2022 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING THAT PORTION OF SOUTHWEST 25TH STREET FROM DOUGLAS ROAD/SOUTHWEST 37TH AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST 36 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "PEDRO MILIAN STREET"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, Pedro Milian ("Milian") was born in Matanzas, Cuba, January 30th, 1939; and WHEREAS, as a young man Milian was an architecture student at the University of Havana and later entrepreneur co-owner of El Teatro Matanzas; and WHEREAS, in his native country, Milian worked to assist his fellow countrymen during the Bay of Pigs invasion and was later captured and accused of collaborating with the United States in anti -communist activities; and WHEREAS, in 1961, Milian escaped the communist regime in Cuba and started working at WFAB Radio in Miami as a sports broadcaster; and WHEREAS, Milian later became an entrepreneur opening El Estilo Furniture store in Little Havana, King Liquors, Lion Lounge, and Habana Madrid restaurant; and WHEREAS, Milian opened P&M Advertisement in 1993 representing and consulting many well established Miami organizations such as Cafe Bustelo, the Miami Marlins, Univision Radio, Habana Vieja Restaurant, Wellmax Medical Center's, TV personalities such as Oscar Haza along with dozens of political leaders; and WHEREAS, Milian was also instrumental in the campaign to permanently rename the county Miami -Dade County working with former Mayor Alex Penelas and other leaders to make it a reality; and WHEREAS, Milian has received many awards and has been recognized for his work with the community, including his extraordinary work with the exile community in Miami; and WHEREAS, Milian has been recognized for his contributions to the City of Miami ("City") and Miami -Dade County by former Governor Bob Graham, Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ross-Lehtinen, Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Juan Bermudez, former Mayors Stephen Clark, Alexander Penelas, Neisen Kasdin, Xavier Suarez, Thomas Regalado, County Commissioner and former West Miami Mayor Rebeca Sosa, Commissioners Manolo Reyes, Joe Carollo, former Commissioners Bruno City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 12745 (Revision:) Printed On: 1111412022 File ID: 12745 Enactment Number: R-22-0404 Barreiro, Wilfredo Gort, entrepreneurs Mike Fernandez, Sergio Pino, Jose Dans, Jorge Plasencia, and the late Herman Echevarria; and WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Pedro Milian with the codesignation of that portion of Southwest 25th Street from Douglas Road/Southwest 37 Avenue to Southwest 36th Avenue, located in City Commission District 4, as "Pedro Milian Street"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and finding contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates that portion of Southwest 25th Street from Douglas Road/Southwest 37 Avenue to Southwest 36th Avenue as "Pedro Milian Street". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Public Works and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; and the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six Secretary for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
