HomeMy WebLinkAboutO-14076City of Miami ` Ordinance 14076 Legislation File Number: 12029 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 7/28/2022 AN ORDINANCE OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION NAMING THE PARCEL OF LAND CONSISTING OF APPROXIMATELY 20,037 SQUARE FEET LOCATED AT 3275 MARGARET STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "THELMA GIBSON HERITAGE GARDEN"; AMENDING CHAPTER 38/ARTICLE I OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, TITLED "PARKS AND RECREATION/IN GENERAL", BY CREATING SECTION 38-32, TITLED "NAMING OF THELMA GIBSON HERITAGE GARDEN"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO EFFECTUATE THE NAMING OF THE PARK; CONTAINING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE; AND PROVIDING FOR AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Commissioner Ken Russell, Commissioner Joe Carollo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes, Commissioner Christine King WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") owns a parcel of land consisting of approximately 20,037 square feet located at 3275 Margaret Street, Miami, Florida, which is currently known as Coconut Grove Heritage Garden ("Park"); and WHEREAS, Thelma Gibson ("Ms. Gibson") was born and grew up in Coconut Grove, Florida, and attended George Washington Carver High School; and WHEREAS, Ms. Gibson worked to provide health care to the Miami community through the E.J. Hall Clinic and the Miami -Dade County Health Department; and WHEREAS, she founded the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Dade County in 1984; and WHEREAS, Ms. Gibson was appointed as Miami's interim City Commissioner in 1997; and WHEREAS, Ms. Gibson has received numerous recognitions for her service including the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Drum Major for Justice Award and the Jackson Memorial Hospital Image Committee Award; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to honor Ms. Gibson and her endless efforts to serve the Miami community over the past 50 plus years; and WHEREAS, the City Commission has determined that it is appropriate for the Park to be named "Thelma Gibson Heritage Garden"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 12029 (Revision:) Printed On: 811212022 File ID: 12029 Enactment Number: 14076 Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Ordinance are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Chapter 38/Article I of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, is further amended as follows:' "CHAPTER 38 PARKS AND RECREATION ARTICLE I. IN GENERAL Sec. 38-32. Naming of Thelma Gibson Heritage Garden. a. The parcel of land consisting of approximately 20,037 square feet located at 3275 Margaret Street, Miami, Florida, shall be named the "Thelma Gibson Heritage Garden." *„ Section 3. The City Manager is directed to take any and all actions necessary to effectuate the naming of the Park. Section 4. If any section, part of a section, paragraph, clause, phrase, or word of this Ordinance is declared invalid, the remaining provisions of this Ordinance shall not be affected. Section 5.
