HomeMy WebLinkAboutSEOPW-CRA-R-02-0142SEOPW/CRA POCKET ITEM 1 SEO-p/CIA RESOLUTION NO. .2 - A 42 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE SOUTHEAST OVERTOWN/PARK WEST COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY ("CRA") AUTHORIZING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THE OVERTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB FOR THE "ANNUAL OVERTOWN COME ALIVE EVENT" SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2002 THRU SUNDAY, AUGUST 25, 2002, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $10,000, SUBJECT TO THE AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS. WHEREAS, the CRA is responsible for the eradication of slum and blight within the Redevelopment Areas; and WHEREAS, the CRA is mandated under Section 163.513, Florida Statutes, which provides for crime prevention through community policing innovations, environmental design, environmental security, and defensible space functions of neighborhood improvement districts. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE SOUTHEAST OVERTOWN/PARK WEST COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. SEOTWXREA 0 - 142 Section 2. The Board of Directors authorizes the Executive Director to provide technical and financial assistance to the Overtown Optimist Club for the "Annual Overtown Come Alive Event" scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2002 thru Sunday, August 2 5, 2002, in an amount not to exceed $10 , 0 0 0 , subject to the availability of funds. WHEREAS, the City of Miami approved and adopted the Southeast Overtown/Parkwest Community Redevelopment Agency Redevelopment Plan pursuant to Resolution No. 82-1247 and 85-1247 (the "Redevelopment Plan"); and WHEREAS, the CRA is responsible for carrying out community redevelopment activities and projects in the Southeast Overtown/Parkwest Redevelopment Area established pursuant to the Redevelopment Area; and WHEREAS, CRA is hereby requesting permission to provide technical and financial assistance, in an amount not to exceed $10,000.00 in support of the Annual Overtown Come Alive Event, to be held August 161h, through August 251h, 2002. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Board of Directors of CRA hereby approving the CRA's commitment to provide technical and financial assistance in support of the Annual Overtown Come Alive Event, to be held August 16th, through August 25th, 2002. TIME 07/10 11:46 USAGE T 00,50 PGS. 7 RESULT OK SE®PW / CRA 02 - 142 Overtown Come -Alive "2K2" Festival The 4th Annual Overtown Come -Alive festival, which is hosted by our organization, (Overtown Community Optimist Club, Inc.) will be utilized as a weekend of unity for the Optimist, the Overtown community, law enforcement and all others that have come together to sponsor this event. This festival will reconstruct events of what Overtown was, is, and should be. It is a weekend filled with entertainment, cultural awareness, crime prevention, education, drug awareness, health screening, fingerprinting, and sporting activities for community residents and all who attend. This event will serve also as a fundraiser for expenses needed to provide and expand programs and services for the youth and residents of this community through our organization. Several different sporting events will be hosted throughout the weekend. The sporting activities include; basketball (3 on 3; Hot Shot; Hustle); with elimination rounds beginning on Friday on until Sunday to the championship game, football (4 on 4 Flag football); on Sunday, and a 5K run/walk, on Sunday morning. There will be entertainment ranging from gospel choirs; singers; dancers; live band performances; talent from local studios, and studios throughout the U.S.; and a featured R&B recording artist. Carnival rides for the kids, featuring a dunk tank with local celebrities sitting inside for the community residents to try and dunk them. Residents and/or vendors wishing to sell their products may also purchase vending spaces. Vendors can sell anything ranging from food to clothing. SEOPW / CRA 02- 142
