The purpose of the project is to provide a route to and from the Port of Miami using
NE/NW 5th and 6th Streets and ramps at 1-95. The Florida Department of Transportation
(FDOT) and Port of Miami have launched the Project Development and Environmental
(PD&E) Study for this project. The project includes multiple proposed improvements.
First, both NE/NW 5th and 6th Streets will be modified for Port traffic access. Second, a
new 1-95 on ramp to westbound SR 836 will be provided. This new access ramp will
start at either NW 6th Street or NW 8th Street. The NW 6t Street alternative will require
that NW 7th Street be permanently closed underneath 1-95 to accommodate the new
ramp and that NW 3`d Court be reduced from 4 to 3 lanes between NW 5th and 8th
Streets. Slight right of way acquisition will also be required on the west side of NW 3`d
Court between NW 5tt' and 7th Streets. The NW 8th Street alternative will require that NW
8th Street be permanently closed to eastbound traffic underneath 1-95. Third, the existing
northbound 1-95 on ramp at NW 8th Street will be modified to increase the vertical
clearance to facilitate usage by high trucks. Fourth, a new hook ramp from southbound
NW 3`d Avenue connecting directly to the existing northbound 1-95 on ramp will be
provided to more directly connect the Overtown community to the interstate. Lastly, NW
5th, 6tt' and 8th Streets will be modified under the 1-95 bridges to increase the vertical
clearances to facilitate usage by high trucks.
