Overtown Art Mural Project
Location: Overtown community NW P Avenue and 9"' Street.
To: The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
Visual Artist Marvin Weeks in collaboration with the Empowerment Trust, The Black
Archives Research Center of South Florida and Timbuktu Marketplace Inc.(an arts and
culture collective) have engaged in an effort to "put a face" on the Historical Legacy of
Miami's Overtown community. In December of 2001 Timbuktu marketplace received a
small grant through the Empowerment Trust's Overtown Assembly for presentation of
African American and Caribbean artist During the Pre -Basel Arts festival which visited
South Florida. This project is a continuing process of providing art to help in the culture
and commerce of developing and restoring the glory of Overtown.
The mural is a realist collage of historical depictions of Overtown buildings, colorful
personalities, clubs, churches and path down a memory lane through art.
Marvin Weeks have received a temporary permit through Overtown's NET Office to
display the mural for a temporary bases. I am requesting from the Community
Redevelopment Agency consideration in purchasing and maintaining this 4 panel mural
as a visual marketing and cultural icon towards the further development of this _
community. Art must have it's place in redeveloping Overtown's Legacy.
