Teele, Jr. and Members of the CRA Board of Directors FROM: Annette Lewis, Acting Executive Director SUBJECT: Appointment of a Culture and Entertainment Liaison As a result of the culture and entertainment activities being performed by the CRA, for both the SEO/PW and Omni districts, and the outcome of the February 25`h, 2002 Board meeting it is befitting of the CRA to appoint a Culture Liaison on a part-time basis for a period not to exceed six months from March 1 ", 2002. This individual's role is to enhance what the CRA has begun in the establishment of a culture and entertainment program and special districts. This individual will also serve as the liaison between the CRA and the District Commissioners, within which our CRA boundaries lie. Commissioner Barbara Carey Shuler of District 3, where most of the CRA districts are located have been instrumental thus far in our efforts to work with the County to meet our ultimate goal of creating a renowned entertainment district in the City of Miami Community Redevelopment Agency districts. This individual will be afforded office space, access to CRA staff and the same resources available to those who work with the CRA. Spence worked with the Tallahassee Urban League coordinating crime prevention for inner-city youth and served as the official coordinator for all urban league chapters in the state of Florida. During her 6-year tenure, she created Tallahassee's first multi -cultural festival, Unity in the Community„ which -is still in existence today. Spence went on to work for a Harlem -based organization, Manhattan Valley, a youth -based organization whose mission was to empower youth. Her role with the organization was Fund Development and Community Outreach. In collaboration with Dr. Bill Cosby, Spence spearheaded the first celebrity benefit, which raised over one million dollars. Spence continued with a public relations firm that handled several music talents from the entertainment industry. She was also responsible for organizing the celebrity participation in the Million Man March. From there she went on to establish the Isaac Hayes Entertainment Company and Foundation. During her four years with Hayes, Spence was responsible for developing film, television and musical projects and spearheaded the foundation's fundraising efforts throughout the country, which raised approximately one million dollars. She also coordinated the launch of the first Literacy Training School in Ada, Ghana West Africa. She founded her own entertainment production and management company, Sunsum Entertainment Group, based in New York and Miami. Sunsum Entertainment Group provides management, consultant and technical support for all types of special events, as well as, artist development and management services. Spence has also started a film and entertainment company, Isadore Ruby Productions, Inc. The Company was created to highlight and to bring to the big screen the life stories of musical greats from yesterday and today. By utilizing a very strong musical presence in the films, their music will serve as a path to recreate their musical achievements as a framework to tell their stories.
