PET TIPS: ANIMAL ABUSE CAN LEAD TO HUMAN VIOLENCE By SUSAN NEUMAN neighbors@herald.com Animals and the humans who have abused them have been in the headlines lately. In South Florida, the criminal who shot and killed a pursuing canine police officer was sentenced to life in prison. In California, the man in a fit of road rage who threw another motor- ist's dog into traffic after a minor accident was sentenced to three years in jail for causing the dog's. death. When announcing the sentence, the judge said he figured the man would soon attack people, not just animals. That judge has his facts right. Surveys of incarcerated hardened criminals have shown that many started by abusing animals before graduating to human victims. Often the abuse of animals started at a young age. An FBI study of anecdotal evidence linked serial killers, serial rapists and sexual perpetrators to acts of animal abuse before age 25. Numerous studies in the past two decades have made the connec- tion. Most recently, the Humane Society of the United States (www.hsus.org) studied 1,624 animal cruelty cases in the U.S. be- tween January and December of 2000. It categorized 922 cases as intentional violence and 504 as extreme neglect. Who is the abuser? Seventy-six percent are men, 24 percent women. Thirty-one per cent were under age 18 and 4 percent were under 12. The connection between cruelty to animals and human violence has now been firmly established. Don't allow cruelty, abuse or neglect of any animal go unreported. If you see anyone, adults or children, treating an animal in less than a humane manner, call the police.
