CAMILLUS HOUSE ANNOUNCES PLANS TO MOVE TO A NEW FACILITY
Established in 1960, Camillus House has grown from a small soup kitchen and overnight
shelter into one of the most comprehensive social service agencies in South Florida.
Throughout this time Camillus House has continually expanded its services in response to
the growing needs of poor and homeless persons in our community: providing
emergency food since 1960, emergency shelter and clothing since 1965, medical care
since 1984, addiction recovery and transitional housing since 1989, permanent housing
and a work training program since 2000.
The success of these programs along with an increased demand for services has led to a
significant rise in the number of clients served by Camillus House. Last year alone,
Camillus House met the needs of thousands of people by providing 16,952 nights of
emergency, overnight shelter; 436,800 free meals; 13,762 medical encounters; and
substance abuse treatment for a 150 individuals. In addition, in collaboration with the
Miami -Dade Homeless Trust, Camillus House has been called upon to expand its
services as an integral part of a collaborative effort to meet the needs of our community's
homeless population.
Now, after 40 years of providing humanitarian services at its landmark facility on NE 8th
Street and 1" Avenue in Downtown Miami, Camillus House will move its center of
operations to a new facility located at 1900 NE Miami Court, just north of downtown
Miami. The hew facility will be larger and capable of encompassing existing programs
such as emergency services and substance abuse treatment programs, including Camillus'
daily meal service, case management services, shover programs, emergency overnight
shelter, and drug treatment programs for homeless men.
The new facility will also allow Camillus House to expand services to include drug
treatment for women and families, as well as provide an on -site transitional housing
program. Classrooms, social services offices, and group meeting space will also be

provided. The new facility will incorporate an open-air courtyard, where homeless
persons who do not wish to sleep inside can still sleep in a safe and healthy environment.
The new site will be designed to be functional, dignified, and large enough to meet the
needs of a growing community. All aspects of the new facility, including an inviting
courtyard and comfortable, dignified living quarters, would be designed to help build
trust between Camillus House and its clients. The object is to first get persons off the
street, build a trusting relationship, and then explore the other social options to address
their condition, including mental health services, substance abuse treatment, illiteracy,
and vocational training assistance.
Every service offered at Camillus is carried out with the deeply held belief that every
human being deserves love, respect, and a chance to live a dignified life. Camillus does
much more than offer a free meal, medical care, a shower, or drug treatment. It offers a
second chance to the desperate, the lonely, and the ones society has left behind. Many of
the clients who come to Camillus House have nowhere else to go. They have no friends,
no family, and no loved ones to help them through their times of trouble. Camillus House
becomes their family, giving them the hope and the support they need to begin the long,
difficult transition to a new life and self-sufficiency.
Admittedly, eliminating homelessness is a daunting task. It involves the love and
collaboration of an entire community. Camillus House has and will continue its efforts to
improve the lives of people by creating new opportunities and new ways to champion the
cause of poor and homeless persons as an advocate of social justice. Camillus House is
grateful for the strong support that the -people of South Florida have given to its mission
during the past 40 years of service. Now, as the difficult process of moving to a new
home begins,*Camillus House again asks this most compassionate community for its
support during this transition.
