HomeMy WebLinkAboutSEOPW OMNI CRA 2000-12-18 Advertisementhis own murder plot, said Sher-
iff's Capt. Steve Carroll; com-
manding .officer of criminal
investigations.
"He was -expecting that his
wife. would be murdered, not
... him," Carroll said.
Charges of murder with spe-
cial circumstances of multiple
murder, murder for financial
gain . and lying in wait were
filed Monday against Adriana
Vasco, 33, and Dennis Earl God-
ley, 30, both of Anaheim, Calif.
Vasco was being held in Los
Angeles. County jail on' unre-
lated misdemeanor warrants
for alleged drunk driving and
other crimes. Godley was jailed
in Suffolk, Va., awaiting trial for
allegedly committing a robbery
with a knife last year before he
came to'California.
Sheriff Michael Carona said
investigators had uncovered "a
tale of intrigue, a tale of mur-
der," but he declined to release
many details because there
might be other arrests.
"These murders were not
random and ... were actually
set in motion by Dr. Kenneth
Stahl himself," Carona said. .
The night of the killings,
Stahl, 57, and Oppy-Stahl, 44,
went to dinner to celebrate her
birthday. , About 10:30 p.m., a
security guard 'spotted their
bodies in a car stopped along a
road. .
The Huntington Beach cou-
ple had been shot several times,
execution -style. The driver's
side window was shattered, but
there were no shell casings or
signs of a struggle. -
"There was virtually no
physical evidence at the scene,"
Carona said.' "It was a very
tough case to put together." .
The killings remained a mys-
tery until detectives began
looking into cellular telephone
calls that Stahl had made to
.Vasco, Carroll said. .
The investigation revealed
that Vasco, a hospital. recep-
tionist, had been Stahl's lover:
for nine years, authorities said:'.
The Stahls had been married,
for 14 years -and had no chil-
dren; although Stahl had a son
from a. previous marriage «-
Investigators also believe'
Oppy-Stahl was aware. of her
husband's affair, Carroll said.
,Why he wanted her killed* -
rather than divorcing her.wasj
not clear, Carroll said.
The:investigators found that's
Stahl had asked several people
to do the job and had suggested
ways 'to commit the murder.q
Finally, he arranged the killing
with Vasco and Godley, Carona -
said. ;
It was unclear whether Stahl
knew that Godley and Vasco -
had been lovers for several''
months, he said.,
Stahl arranged the time andtt
location of the killing. 1
"He just got a surprise at the[.,
end," Carroll said. r.5
Informant blamedin'' alleged death plot-r,-.. j
NEW YORK — (AP) — An
alleged stock swindler accused
of plotting to kill the judge
hearing his case has testified
that the idea for the murder
originated with the informant
who turned him in.

ganville, N.J., is on trial. for
Allegedly offering to pay a fel-
low jail inmate, Carl Legand,
$50,000 to kill State Supreme
Court, Justice .Leslie Crocker
Snyder.
'Winkler testified Tuesday
that Legand urged the killing
after Winkler complained that
his $1 million cash bail was too
high and worried that he would
not get a fair trial under Snyder.
