DIEGO MEDINA" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, Dr. Diego Medina ("Medina") was a Cuban exile who produced and broadcasted a one -hour radio program for broadcast to Cuba, "The Voice of Alpha 66"; and WHEREAS, Medina was also Vice -Secretary General of the exile Group Alpha 66; and WHEREAS, during the week, Medina was a medical doctor with two (2) clinics in Miami; and WHEREAS, many of Medina's patients had been seeing him since he practiced medicine in Cuba; and WHEREAS, the Voice of Alpha 66 was heard on AM radio stations in Miami as well as on shortwave stations audible in Cuba, including WHRI, WRMI, and for a brief time on WRNO; and WHEREAS, Medina was not a professional radio producer or announcer, but felt strongly that one of the best ways to promote freedom in his homeland was through radio programs that educate the population about democracy and free enterprise; and WHEREAS, Medina worked tirelessly five (5) days per week to produce the daily one - hour radio program; and WHEREAS, his programs included interviews with former political prisoners, discussions with economists about the Cuban economy, and even messages to the Cuban people from his 13-year old daughter; and WHEREAS, Medina worked on his radio program up until his death; and WHEREAS, after complications caused by the flu, Medina passed away in July 1999, in Miami; and WHEREAS, Medina is remembered as a kind, gentle, charismatic, well -liked man who spoke eloquently on behalf of the Alpha 66 organization and Cuban exile community; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 12126 (Revision: A) Printed On: 71712022 File ID: 12126 Enactment Number: R-22-0231 WHEREAS, on October 10, 2002, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. R-02- 1148 to honor Medina by co -designating Southwest 2nd Street from Southwest 27th Avenue to Southwest 31st Court, Miami, Florida as "Calle Dr. Diego Medina"; and WHEREAS, the City would like to reaffirm the co -designation of Southwest 2nd Street from Southwest 27th Avenue to Southwest 31 st Court, Miami, Florida as "Calle Dr. Diego Medina"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission reaffirms the co -designation of that portion of Southwest 2nd Street from Southwest 27th Avenue to Southwest 31 st Court within the City's limits of Miami, Florida as "Calle Dr. Diego Medina". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 5; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
