A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR
THE MIAMI COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) PROGRAM AND
ENCOURAGING THE MIAMI RESIDENTS TO TAKE A MORE ACTIVE ROLE IN
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PROJECTS IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
WHEREAS, the Division of Emergency Management ("DEM") of the City of Miami Fire
Rescue Department created the Miami Community Emergency Response Team ("CERT")
Program to prepare individuals to care for themselves, their family members, and their
neighbors during an emergency or disaster until professional emergency responders arrive; and
WHEREAS, volunteer Miami CERT members may be activated to support emergency or
disaster operations as well as non -emergency operations within the City of Miami community;
and
WHEREAS, Miami CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in
emergency preparedness projects in their community; and
WHEREAS, persons who are trained in CERT will have the skills to help emergency
responders save lives and protect property during emergency events; and
WHEREAS, the Miami CERT is a program that trains citizens in basic emergency
response skills so that they can supplement and support, not replace, professional emergency
responders during a major emergency incident or disaster; and
WHEREAS, the Miami CERT is actively seeking volunteers for the Program and will be
conducting a recruitment drive during the month of June; and
WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission and Mayor Frances Suarez express their
support for the Miami CERT Program; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the City Code, the City Commission,
by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Mayor and Miami City Commission express their support of the Miami
CERT Program and encourages Miami residents to take a more active role in emergency
preparedness projects in their community.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
