City Clerk AWMNI SPOTUGHT WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE LIKE AT LOTUS HOUSE? The experience at the Lotus House was rle changing. I don't believe I would be where I am today without the assistance of the Lotus House. Many people have a False depiction on what a homeless person looks like, but in actuality have no idea. I became officially homeless at the end of 2012. 1 was a college student living my best life on campus but if I'm honest with myself I was homeless. The nurse at my college told me about Lotus House one day. She called and L.H said a bed had just opened up and if I don't grab it now I'll probably be waiting a while to get in. I was terrified but I went that night. Homelessness to me is not having a stable, reliable, consistent, and safe place to live. I didn't receive that stability until 10 months later transition ing out of the Lotus House Women's Shelter. During the 10 months living at the L.H. I was able to gain employment, housing and continue on with my college education. I love the saying "You grow through what you go through". It was extremely difficult but I mode it through. If you're currently experiencing homelessness understand it doesn't have a Face and you too deserve to have stability and peace. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LIFE AFTER YOU LEFT LOTUS HOUSE? After leaving the Lotus House I went on to have my very first apartment. I continued to be employed and received my AA at Miami Dade College in 2015.1 made the decision to go and complete my bachelors degree in Savannah, GA at the HBCU Savannah State University. I received my bachelors degree in 2017 in audio/video production. My career goal is to be a screenplay writer and direct my material. I'm currently pursuing that --in tin Atlanta, GA. WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN FILMMAKING AND VISUAL EFFECTS? I've always known I wanted to be in the film industry since I started college. To do what? I had no clue. As a teenager I loved reading stories and diving so deep in them I never wanted to put the book down. In high school I would literally spend my lunch time in the library reading. Experiencing the impact ofthe COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of web -based information sharing and social media. With the world changing before us, Lotus House has recognized that there is no better time than now to expand into the digital space. Reflecting on the experiences and lessons learned of this past year, the 'Studio at Lotus Village' and 'Lotus Village Voices Vodcast' were born. In the Studio at Lotus Village, we have created an exploratory educational, therapeutic, and creative arts program and vodcast for the children and families sheltered at Lotus House. Day-to-day studio programming includes collaborative and individual song writing, poetry and choreography workshops and explorative music -making with professional and homemade instruments. With the use of the new recording studio, the Vodcast amplifies the talents, stories, hopes, and dreams of sheltered children and families at Lotus House. This new show provides our Village with a platform to deliver news and narratives to our followers in an unprecedented manner, broadcasting our everyday struggles and triumphs into their phones, computers, homes, offices and classrooms via prominent digital platforms. We are delighted to announce that our episodes can be found on Spotify and Apple podcasts! The implementation of this latest innovation encourages creative expression and learning, creates outlets for the voices of children and families, and allows information sharing on evidence -based best practices and innovative solutions modeled in Lotus Village. As a result of our ongoing research efforts, Lotus House sponsored research with the Women's Lab from Florida International University, which explored the experiences of women in shelters. Stemming from this community based service -driven research, "A culture of care: How Lotus House Women's Shelter heals program participants through genuineness, space, high expectations, dignity, individualized attention, and community," co-authored by the Florida International University Women's Lab, has now been officially published in the Journal of Community Psychology. In connection with our early childhood research, which is made possible by the generosity and continued support of The Children's Trust of Miami Dade County, Lotus House demonstrates how the provision of evidence -based interventions and trauma -informed practices, that truly place children first, can help heal broken bonds and reduce the effects of childhood trauma. Comparing two parenting programs implemented by our Children's Services Program, our paper, co-authored with Florida International University "Early Assessment and Intervention for Families Experiencing Homelessness" is currently under peer review for publication in the Journal of Consulting Psychology! Our latest paper sum marizing the findings of ourservice driven research with Florida International University, "Addressing M ental Health and Trauma -Related Needs of Sheltered Children and Families with Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy," has been officially submitted for peer review to the Journal of Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research. In the face of a dearth of research on the special needs of women and children experiencing homelessness and ways to support their healing and growth, Lotus House continues to lead the way, advancing service driven research, showcasing best practices and innovation, sharing information, developing policy recommendations, and providing innovative solutions to ending homelessness. Relevant to the children and families we serve, the findings of our ongoing community based service -driven research have allowed Lotus House to enhance the experience of children and families, as we support their transition out of homelessness. Through our research, policy and public education initiatives, we aim to provide other service providers with a replicable and scalable framework to help transform the lives of those they serve.
