A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 53RD STREET FROM NORTHWEST 5TH AVENUE TO
NORTHWEST 7TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "MUHAMMAD ALI WAY"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"), AND AUTHORIZING THE
PLACEMENT OF TWO (2) MARKER DESIGNATIONS IN THE PUBLIC RIGHT-
OF-WAY ADJACENT TO THE PROPERTIES LOCATED AT 4610
NORTHWEST 15 COURT AND 6101 NORTHWEST 17 AVENUE PURSUANT
TO SECTION 54-136 OF THE CITY CODE TO COMMEMORATE MUHAMMAD
ALI; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF
THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville,
Kentucky, Muhammad Ali ("Ali") became a well-known American professional boxer and civil
rights activist with deep ties to a portion of the City of Miami's ("City") history; and
WHEREAS, Ali lived in the City for a portion of his life, including in Overtown, the cultural
center of Black Miami; and
WHEREAS, on February 25, 1964, Ali won the heavyweight championship fight against
Sonny Liston ("Liston") at the Miami Beach Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, after his victory against Liston, Ali celebrated at the Historic Hampton
House, a preeminent motel catering to African Americans in the1960s; and
WHEREAS, shortly after meeting with a few other prominent African American figures of
that era, Ali changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali; and
WHEREAS, before the famous "Fight of the Century" between Ali and Joe Frazier on
March 8, 1971, Ali trained at the 5t" Street Gym in Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, outside of his training career in the City, Ali opened a restaurant called
Champ Burger in 1968 with a location in Coconut Grove and another in Liberty City; and
WHEREAS, from fellowshipping to training, Ali carved a piece of himself into the heart of
the City; and
WHEREAS, Ali passed away on June 3, 2016 at the age of 73; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Ali by co -designating Northwest 53rd Street
from Northwest 5th Avenue to Northwest 7th Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Muhammad Ali Way"
and authorizing the placement of two (2) marker designations in the public right-of-way adjacent

to the property located at 4610 Northwest 15 Court, which was where Ali lived, and the property
located at 6101 Northwest 17 Avenue, which was where Champ Burger was located, to
commemorate Ali;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Northwest 53rd Street from Northwest 5th Avenue to Northwest 7th Avenue, Miami, Florida as
"Muhammad Ali Way" and authorizes the placement of two (2) marker designations in the
public right-of-way adjacent to the properties located at 4610 Northwest 15 Court and 6101
Northwest 17 Avenue to commemorate Ali.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
