WHEREAS, Governor Ron DeSantis is proposing a twenty-five million dollar ($25,000,000.00) investment to support urgent structural repairs to continue the historic legacy of the Freedom Tower; and WHEREAS, the Freedom Tower has been a symbol of freedom and democracy standing tall in the Miami skyline for decades; and WHEREAS, from 1959 to 1974, more than 650,000 Cubans came to the United States to flee the oppressive communist regime; and WHEREAS, the Freedom Tower represents the American dream, built in 1925 as the home of The Miami News and later served as housing for Cubans fleeing tyranny for Democracy during the Cold War; and WHEREAS, the funding from the State of Florida will ensure this landmark stays as a staple of Miami for generations to visit and learn about what it means to be free; and WHEREAS, to this day, the people of Cuba continue to fight against an oppressive communist regime; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is particularly sympathetic to Cuba's fight for freedom because the vibrant Cuban community in the City has a vested interest in assuring that a democratic system is put into place in the country of Cuba; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission supports Governor Ron DeSantis' proposal to allocate twenty-five million dollars ($25,000,000.00) of funding to invest in urgent structural repairs to the Freedom Tower. Section 3. The City Commission urges the leaders and members of the Florida Legislature to approve the proposed funding allocation for the Freedom Tower. Section 4. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Ron DeSantis, Speaker of the House Chris Sprowls, Senate President Wilton Simpson, the Members of the Miami -Dade County Legislative Delegation, and the Florida Congressional Delegation. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
