A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 13TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 62ND STREET TO
NORTHWEST 65TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "LANCE CORPORAL KIRK
HALL SMITH WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY
CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, on October 23,1983, 220 Marines and 21 servicemen were killed during
what is considered to be one of the deadliest days for the United States Marine Corps ("Corps")
since the Battle of Iwa Jima; and
WHEREAS, the 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombings occurred during the Lebanese Civil War
when a suicide bomber pulled up to the Corps' barracks and detonated explosives that
collapsed the building; and
WHEREAS, one of those Marines that lost their lives was Lance Corporal Kirk Hall Smith
("Smith"), a resident of the City of Miami's ("City") District 5; and
WHEREAS, Smith was raised in the City on Northwest 131h Court in the area between
Northwest 62 Street and Northwest 65 Street; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Smith by co -designating Northwest 13th Avenue
from Northwest 62nd Street to Northwest 65th Street as "Lance Corporal Kirk Hall Smith Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Northwest 13th Avenue from Northwest 62nd Street to Northwest 65th Street as "Lance
Corporal Kirk Hall Smith Way".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
