A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 27TH COURT FROM WEST FLAGLER STREET TO
NORTHWEST 3RD STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "CHAMACO GARCIA WAY"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, Chamaco Garcia ("Garcia") was born in 1938; and
WHEREAS, Garcia was a renowned performer and artist; and
WHEREAS, Garcia's voice and versatility allowed him to perform across multiple genres,
including zarzuela, opera, and Broadway musicals; and
WHEREAS, his charismatic personality and generosity catapulted Garcia among the
most beloved artists of all Cuban exiles; and
WHEREAS, it is thought that Garcia's first recordings were with the Havana Cuba Boys
Orchestra; and
WHEREAS, Garcia became a member of the musical group Luis Santi, performing on
the Cuban CMQ radio and television stations in Havana, Cuba; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the radio and television performances during this time, Garcia
sang in Havana's best nightclubs and cabarets; and
WHEREAS, in 1960, Garcia went on to tour in theatres outside of Cuba; and
WHEREAS, Garcia became a steady figure on two (2) weekly programs on Mexico's
Channel 6; and
WHEREAS, in 1970, Garcia settled in the City of Miami ("City") while he continued to
tour in other cities and perform on Broadway with prestigious artistic directors, including Rene
Bush and Andre De Shields; and
WHEREAS, Garcia landed the leading role in The Fantasticks, the longest running
musical in history according to The New York Times; and
WHEREAS, Garcia was a part of several popular television shows, including Siempre en
Domingo, Sabado Gigante, E/ Show de Porcel, and La Feria de /a Alegria and had a recurring

guest role as "Father Santos" on the beloved and critically acclaimed bilingual television series
�Que Pasa, USA?; and
WHEREAS, Garcia received multiple awards, such as "Best Singer" in the Mexican
Music Festival in 1962; "Best Supporting Actor" from the Herald de Mexico in 1969 for Fiddler
on the Roof, "Best Actor" from the New York Latin Asociacion de Cronistas de Espectaculos
(ACE) in 1978 for The Fantasticks; a Gold Medal from the Jose Marti Foundation; a Gold Medal
of Great Music Legends from the University of Miami in 2016; 12 wins and 14 nominations in
various categories from the Association of Critics and Commentaries of the Arts; and 15 wins
and 18 nominations in various categories from the Association of Critics in North America; and
WHEREAS, the City previously declared August 24, 1991 as "Chamaco Garcia Day";
and
WHEREAS, Miami -Dade County ("County") previously declared August 25, 1991 as
"Chamaco Garcia Day"; and
WHEREAS, Garcia was also known for his charitable work, such as visiting with Cuban
rafters at the Guantanamo Naval Base; visiting Cubans stranded in Panama because of events
of the Panama Embassy in Cuba; joining Cuban -American doctors from the City on a
humanitarian mission to help with medical and dental needs for impoverished people and
children in Managua, Nicaragua; and performing at many charity concerts for La Liga Contra el
Cancer; and
WHEREAS, Garcia's last performance was in 2011 at the County's Auditorium; and
WHEREAS, Garcia's artistic career spanned over sixty (60) years in radio, television,
and theater; and
WHEREAS, Garcia passed away on September 28, 2016 in the City after developing an
infection during a minor back surgery; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Garcia by co -designating Northwest 27th Court
from West Flagler Street to Northwest 3rd Street as "Chamaco Garcia Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Northwest 27th Court from West Flagler Street to Northwest 3rd Street as "Chamaco Garcia
Way„
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the County's Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the
newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
