IiRl 11 +*� Resolution: R-21-0374 File Number: 10723 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 9/13/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION OBSERVING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2021 AS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH; ENCOURAGING ALL RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF MIAMI TO OBSERVE CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, TO SUPPORT THEIR FRIENDS, FAMILIES, AND NEIGHBORS COPING WITH CHILDHOOD CANCER, TO OFFER ENCOURAGEMENT TO PATIENTS UNDERGOING TREATMENT, TO REMEMBER LOST LOVED ONES, TO SPREAD AWARENESS OF THIS CAUSE THAT SO MANY FAMILIES MUST STRUGGLE WITH, AND TO APPRECIATE THE EFFORTS OF THOSE WHO WORK TO TREAT AND SUPPORT CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. WHEREAS, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and the second overall leading cause of death for children under the age of 15 in the United States; and WHEREAS, one (1) in two hundred eighty five (285) children in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer before their twentieth (201h) birthday; and WHEREAS, forty-six (46) children per day, or 16,790 children per year, are diagnosed with cancer in the United States; and WHEREAS, there are approximately 40,000 children on active treatment at any given time; and WHEREAS, eighty percent (80%) of childhood cancer patients are diagnosed late and with metastatic disease; and WHEREAS, on average, there has been a 0.6% increase in incidence per year since the mid-1970s resulting in overall incidence increase of 24% over the last forty (40) years; and WHEREAS, two-thirds (2/3) of childhood cancer patients will have chronic health conditions as a result of their treatment toxicity, with one quarter (1/4) being classified as severe to life -threatening; and WHEREAS, approximately one-half (1/2) of childhood cancer families rate the associated financial toxicity due to out-of-pocket expenses as considerable to severe; and WHEREAS, in the last twenty (20) years, only four (4) new drugs have been approved by the Fand Drug Administration to specifically treat childhood cancer; and WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute recognizes the unique research needs of childhood cancer and the associated need for increased funding to carry this out; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 10723 (Revision:) Printed On: 912412021 File ID: 10723 Enactment Number: R-21-0374 WHEREAS, hundreds of non-profit organizations at the local and national level, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Live like Bella Childhood Cancer Foundation, and American Childhood Cancer Organization, are helping children with cancer and their families cope through educational, emotional, and financial support; and WHEREAS, researchers and healthcare professionals work diligently dedicating their expertise to treat and cure children with cancer; and WHEREAS, too many children are affected by this deadly disease and more must be done to raise awareness and find a cure; and WHEREAS, the City Commission hereby observes the month of September 2021 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and supports this cause that so deeply impacts families and communities both locally and nationally; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble of this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission observes the month of September 2021 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City. Section 3. The City Commission encourages all residents of the City to observe Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; to support their friends, families, and neighbors coping with childhood cancer; to offer encouragement to patients undergoing treatment; to remember lost loved ones; to spread awareness of this cause that so many families must struggle with; to support organizations such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Live like Bella Childhood Cancer Foundation, and American Childhood Cancer Organization financially or by volunteering; and to appreciate the efforts of those who work to treat and support children diagnosed with cancer. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
