3RD STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "AGAPITO `EL GUAPO' RIVERA WAY"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA,
AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF

A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
NORTHWEST 47TH AVENUE FROM WEST FLAGLER STREET TO NORTHWEST
3RD STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "AGAPITO `EL GUAPO' RIVERA WAY"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA,
AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF
THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Agapito "El Guapo" Rivera ("El Guapo") was born in Corralillo, Las Villas,
Cuba in 1937 and died in the City of Miami ("City") on December 21, 2020; and
WHEREAS, when the revolution arrived in Cuba on January 1, 1959, El Guapo quickly
realized the wrong course it was taking by leading the country into an embrace of communism
and took up arms against the emerging Castro dictatorship in October 1960; and
WHEREAS, El Guapo became the second in command of the rebels on the North Front
of Las Villas and was called El Guapo because of how bravely he fought; and
WHEREAS, El Guapo lost eleven (11) family members in the war against the Castro
regime; and
WHEREAS, El Guapo was a guerilla commander in Las Villas when, in 1963, he
received five (5) combat wounds in battle against the Castro regime's army, was captured,
served twenty five (25) years as a political prisoner in Cuba, and was a plantado prisoner; and
WHEREAS, in May 1998, El Guapo arrived in the City as a Cuban exile; and
WHEREAS, El Guapo served as the president of the Cuban Patriotic Association where
he organized monthly meetings to keep the cause of Cuban freedom alive; and
WHEREAS, El Guapo was also the author of the book "La Lucha en los Llanos de
Cuba," which is translated into "The Struggle in the Plains of Cuba"; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor El Guapo by co -designating Northwest 47th
Avenue from West Flagler Street to Northwest 3rd Street as "Agapito'El Guapo' Rivera Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Northwest 47th Avenue from West Flagler Street to Northwest 3rd Street as "Agapito `El Guapo'
Rivera Way".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the
newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
