BIDEN, JR. AND THE 117TH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES (COLLECTIVELY, "FEDERAL GOVERNMENT") TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO ASSIST THE CUBAN PEOPLE IN THEIR CALL FOR FREEDOM AND RELIEF FROM CUBA'S SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST REGIME; FURTHER URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND TREATMENT TO COMBAT THE LATEST SURGE OF THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS ON THE ISLAND; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS NAMED HEREIN. SPONSOR(S): Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Commissioner Ken Russell, Commissioner Joe Carollo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes, Commissioner Jeffrey Watson WHEREAS, Cuba has been under a communist and tyrannical regime since 1959; and WHEREAS, since the start of the regime, the people of Cuba have endured decades of cruelty, oppression, and economic despair; and WHEREAS, even after the death of the regime's leader, Fidel Castro, much work is still needed to secure the freedom of the Cuban people; and WHEREAS, on Sunday, July 11, 2021, thousands of people protested in cities and towns across Cuba, including Havana, to call for the end of the dictatorship ruling over Cuba and to demand food and vaccines; and WHEREAS, witnessing the plight of the Cuban people, communities throughout the world have also protested to support the Cuban people in their call for freedom; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is particularly sympathetic to Cuba's fight for freedom because the Cuban community in the City has a vested interest in assuring that a democratic system is put into place in Cuba; and WHEREAS, the City Commission urges President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. his administration, and the leaders of the 117th Congress of the United States (collectively, "Federal Government") to take any and all actions necessary to assist the Cuban people in their call for an end to the decades -old dictatorship; and WHEREAS, the City Commission further urges the Federal Government to provide medical equipment and treatment to the Cuban people to assist them in combating the recent surge of the novel coronavirus ("COVID-19") that has gripped the island; City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 9366 (Revision: A) Printed On: 712712021 File ID: 9366 Enactment Number: R-21-0300 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission urges the Federal Government, including the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, to take any and all actions necessary to assist the Cuban people in their call for freedom and end the decades -old dictatorship. Section 3. The City Commission further urges the Federal Government to provide medical equipment and treatment to combat the latest surge of COVID-19 on the island. Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.; Vice President Kamala Harris; Majority Leader of the United States Senate Charles E. Schumer; Minority Leader of the United States Senate Mitch McConnell; Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi; Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy; Senators Marco Rubio, Rick Scott, Robert Menendez, and Ted Cruz; Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos A Gimenez, Maria Elvira Salazar, Albio Sires, Alexander Xavier Mooney, Nicole Malliotakis, and Anthony Gonzalez; Secretary -General Antonio Guterres of the United Nations; European Parliament President David -Maria Sassoli; European Council President Charles Michel; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; and Secretary General Luis Leonardo Almagro Lemes of the Organization of American States. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
